About Dennis Daugaard

Dennis Daugaard has been South Dakota's Lieutenant Governor since 2003. From 1997 to 2002, Dennis represented Turner, McCook and rural Minnehaha counties in the SD Senate. Dennis also served until the fall of 2009 as the Executive Director of Children's Home Society, a charity that cares for abused and neglected children.

Dennis' grandparents came from Denmark in 1911, and purchased a farm between Dell Rapids and Garretson, where Dennis' father was born, and where Dennis grew up. When Dennis was young, his family raised cattle, hogs, and chickens, and grew corn, soybeans, oats and hay. Later, they switched to dairy farming, and Dennis helped his dad milk every day, at 5 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Dennis' parents were both deaf, so he became fluent in sign language to communicate.
He attended a one-room country school until seventh grade. Dennis graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1971, from USD in 1975, and from Northwestern Law School in Chicago in 1978.

Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Linda, in 1981. With their own hands, they built a home and raised three children – Laura, Sara, and Chris – on the same family farm where Dennis grew up.

My values are South Dakota values.

Pro-business.
We need to focus on creating jobs. That means low taxes and less red tape – and it's why I won't raise taxes to balance the budget.

Living within our means.
State government should be fiscally conservative – we should live within our means and balance our budget.

Small government.
Government should only act where individual citizens cannot.

Protecting the unborn.
I'm pro-life and I have the voting record to prove it.
I know that every child deserves the chance to live in a loving family.

The Right to Bear Arms.
This right guarantees that our citizens are safe and our sportsmen can enjoy our incredible hunting opportunities. I'm proud to have an "A" lifetime rating
from the National Rifie Association.

States' Rights.
We need to resist a federal government that spends money we don't have on programs we don't want.
Big spending and one-size-fits-all programs don't work for South Dakota.

Farming and Ranching.
Agriculture is the backbone of our economy and our farmers and ranchers deserve our strong support.

Support for Tourism.

Our visitor industry continues to outpace national trends, and we need to bring even more visitors to South Dakota.

Quality education.
Every young person should be prepared to attend college, enroll in technical school, or enter the workforce.

Support for our troops and our veterans.
These brave men and women put their lives on the line to protect our freedom – and they deserve the strongest support from our state government.

Matt Michels – Our Next Lt. Governor

I'm honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the people of South Dakota as your next Lt. Governor.

I believe in limited government and self-reliance. But I also believe we need to take care of those who cannot help themselves. While serving in the state legislature I had the opportunity to sponsor legislation that:

• Improved the protection of abused and neglected children

• Increased health insurance coverage for children at the poverty level

• Placed the tobacco settlement funds in a trust that would fund programs
to prevent kids from smoking

• Protected children by increasing the penalty for convicted child molesters and requiring background checks for all school employees

• Enhanced education by increasing salaries for teachers with national certification, helped improve reading recovery programs, and increased funding for technology in education.
