"To fix the state budget, I will cut wasteful state spending and NOT RAISE TAXES on families struggling in Rhode Island."

– FRANK CAPRIO

"I oppose any new tax on groceries, clothing or prescription drugs."

– FRANK CAPRIO

Dear Friend:

Families throughout Rhode Island have had to spend less and prioritize what matters most during these tough economic times.

State government needs to do the same.

As Treasurer, I saved a million dollars from my budget and returned it to the state treasury.

As Governor, I will:

  • Cut wasteful spending by taking away all free cars, gas cards and cell phones from all non-emergency state employees to save taxpayers money.
  • Consolidate the 39 cities' and towns' public works, police and fire departments into five regions to cut administrative costs and overhead.
  • Create new jobs by giving tax credits to Rhode Island small businesses to help them grow and expand.
  • Offer tax credits to attract renewable energy companies to Rhode Island and increase funding for job training programs at community colleges.
Together we can bring this state back.

Lincoln Chafee's Plan Is To Raise Sales Taxes on Groceries, Clothing And Prescription Drugs

The Providence Journal
JAN 5, 2010
"$89-million-tax-raising proposal"

Unemployment is over 11%, we have record home foreclosures and Rhode Island families are struggling to pay their bills – yet Chafee wants to increase your sales tax on things that are essential to live on.

  • Chafee wants to create a new tax on groceries!
  • Chafee wants to create a new tax on clothes!
  • Chafee wants to raise taxes on prescription drugs!
  • Chafee wants to increase the taxes you pay when buying gas!

It is not surprising that Lincoln Chafee wants to raise taxes. When Chafee was mayor of Warwick, property taxes went up five straight years.

Linc Chafee Just Doesn't Get It

The state must be an advocate for small business, not an adversary.

"I developed my Rhode Island Small Business Plan after meeting with more than 100 small business owners and workers to learn firsthand what the state could do to help them.

My plan calls for new tax credits to help small businesses grow, better access to loans, and the elimination of bureaucratic red tape from state agencies that slows them down.

If we help every small business in Rhode Island create one new job, we will cut the state unemployment number in half. That is my goal."

THE DIFFERENCE:

Linc Chafee wants to RAISE TAXES, which will hurt our economy and families struggling to get by.

Frank Caprio wants to CUT TAXES for small businesses to create jobs and help Rhode Island families.

"IF WE HELP EVERY SMALL BUSINESS CREATE ONE NEW JOB WE WILL CUT UNEMPLOYMENT IN RHODE ISLAND IN HALF!"
– FRANK CAPRIO

Dear Friend,

There are more than 35,000 small businesses in Rhode Island.

They are the backbone of our economy and the key to new job creation.

Over the past year, I have met with more than 1,000 small business owners and workers to learn firsthand what would work best to help them grow and expand.

My Rhode Island Small Business Plan is based on real ideas from real people.

It includes:

  • Create new jobs by giving tax credits to Rhode Island small businesses that expand and hire new employees.
  • Expand access to credit for small businesses to make it easier to grow.
  • Offer tax incentives to attract renewable energy jobs to Rhode Island and increase funding for job training programs at our colleges.
As Governor, I will make Rhode Island the friend of small businesses and new jobs, not the adversary.

If you want a Governor who will take strong, bold steps to turn this state around, then I ask for your vote on November 2nd.

CHAFEE'S PLAN IS TO RAISE TAXES ON GROCERIES, PRESCRIPTIONS, CLOTHES AND GAS.
[Chafee's plan applies to over 80 currently non-taxed items]

Chafee Senate campaign didn't pay RI, fed taxes
Oct 08, 2010 I PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP)
"Independent Rhode Island gubernatorial candidate Lincoln Chafee's old Senate campaign committee failed to pay federal and state taxes for five years and owes an estimated $18,400 in taxes and penalties, a campaign aide told The Associated Press on Thursday."

"That completely detracts and undermines his campaign message, which rests on the idea of trust and integrity."
Wendy Schiller, Professor, Brown University, Associated Press, 10/09/2010

"Chafee's plan to raise taxes will hurt the Rhode Island economy and cause more people to lose their jobs."

"Raise taxes during a recession? That's crazy. We need to cut wasteful state spending, not raise taxes."

"It's amazing that Chafee wants to raise our taxes and he didn't pay his own taxes for five years."
