Keith Allred

Keith Allred boasts the independent streak that characterizes his home state and so many of its people. A fifth-generation Idahoan, Keith was raised in Twin Falls. He grew up hunting and fishing the Wood River valley where his great-great-grandfather grubbed the family homestead out of sage brush over a century ago. His connections to Idaho—its places and its people—have given Keith the confidence to pursue opportunities far beyond its borders as well as the conviction that his life's work would unfold here.

That work is to bring people together to solve our most pressing problems. Keith's problem-solving approach—both rigorously practical and thoughtful—had its beginning when he left the classrooms of Twin Faiis High School for summers on his grandfather's cattle ranch. Then, tough economic times meant that Keith worked the family's 1,200 acre, 400 head cattle ranch all on his own-getting a hands-on education in problem solving.

Keith's practical approach to problem-solving has been refined through serious study and a career in conflict resolution. Keith earned a B.A. in American History, studying for two years at Brown University before graduating from Stanford University. As an American History major who studied the Founding Fathers, Keith was impressed by their determination to address the "problem of faction"—what we today call partisan and special interest politics—in order to establish a robust union. He was so impressed by the Founders' emphasis of the importance of finding solutions that could attract broad and diverse support that he went on for a Ph.D. from UCLA, specializing in conflict resolution.

For the following decade, Keith taught conflict resolution and leadership, first, as a professor at Columbia University and, then, at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Still, Keith's real passion is for solving real world problems. A can-do mediator, Keith has worked to resolve disputes involving public lands, land use, hydroelectric dams, and tribal issues. He has worked for corporations, federal and state agencies, county and city governments, tribal governments and governments abroad.

Keith's determination to solve problems by bringing people together has shaped his politics as well as his profession. In 2004, Keith founded The Common Interest. This citizens' group of more than 1,600 Idahoans—Republicans, Democrats, and independents—works to put common sense solutions ahead of special interest and partisan politics in the legislature. Over the last five years, Keith has led The Common Interest to a record of impressive legislative achievements. The Common Interest accomplishments include substantially reducing homeowners' property taxes, three laws that protect private property rights against abuse of the government's power of eminent domain, and measures that protect the public's access to legislative meetings.

Keith and his wife Christine are now raising a sixth generation of Idahoans. Keith spends as much time as possible camping, fly-fishing and skiing with Anna, Dan, and Cate, and has even exchanged cutting horse competitions (Keith rode his prize mare, Little Angelena, to Nationals twice) for trail riding with them in the foothills near their Eagle home.
