WHY ARE WE GIVING THE CARROT, NOT THE STICK, TO FOREIGN FOOD COMPANIES?

The U.S. government spends about $38 BILLION EACH YEAR to subsidize what we now recognize as environmentally destructive, cruel businesses whose products and practices are detrimental to human health.

DID YOU KNOW
that meat, egg, and dairy subsidies do next to nothing to benefit local farmers and economies? American tax dollars are going to foreign-owned corporations such as Smithfield Foods, which is Chinese-owned, and JBS, which is based in Brazil and has been implicated in the destruction of the rainforest. Other major meat companies such as Tyson Foods, Hormel, and Perdue have also received millions of taxpayer dollars. These companies tend to have horrible worker safety records (some have even been found using child labor), make rural areas near factory farms unlivable, reduce property values, and funnel money out of rural cornmunities and into the pockets of their executives.

Factory-farmed animals are crammed into filthy sheds and crowded cages. The ends of the beaks of "laying hens" are cut off, and cows used for milk are forcibly impregnated, after which the calves they cherish are taken from them so that the milk meant for them can be sold for human consumption. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, at the slaughterhouse, animals are hung upside down before their throats are slit—often while they're still conscious.

Animal agriculture contributes to the climate catastrophe, air and water pollution, rainforest destruction, and other environmental problems on an unimaginable scale. Pollution from factory farms can cause humans to experience brain damage, depression, asthma, miscarriages, and birth defects. Animal agriculture is also responsible for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections and severe respiratory problems.

lt's Time to Subsidize Healthy Foods, Not Animal Faotories
Rather than footing the bill for meat, eggs, and dairy, politicians can support the production of sustainable plant-based foods and incentivize Americans to make healthier, kinder, and greener choices. Vegan foods are 100% cholesterol-free and generally low in saturated fat. Studies show that subsidizing fruits and vegetables could prevent nearly 2 miIlion cardiovascular events and save about $40 billion in healthcare costs.
