A SMALL TOWN KID FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
 
Doug Burgum was born and raised in Arthur, North Dakota, a tiny town with a population of around 350 people. From an early age, he learned the value of hard work. He worked for his family's grain elevator business, started his own shoe shine business, and worked his way through college as a chimney sweep.

Doug graduated from North Dakota State University and earned an MBA from Stanford.

Doug learned the value of hard work at his family's grain elevator as a kid.

One of Doug's very first ventures was a shoe shine business he started with friends at a young age.

Doug Burgum is in a ranch partnership which has raised bison under the same brand as President Teddy Roosevelt.

Doug literally bet the farm to turn a small business into a billion dollar software company employing thousands. Doubters said North Dakota was too small, too remote & too cold; but Doug did it with the help of team members from over 220 small towns.

After graduating from NDSU in 1978 and Stanford in 1980, Doug Burgum worked to get a small software startup – Great Plains Software – off the ground.

At Great Plains Software, Doug created over 2,000 jobs drawn from small town kids. They served 140,000 businesses in 132 countries before acquisition by Microsoft for $11 billion.
