Notes: South Dakota voters had two choices for Senate: either Sen. John Thune (R), seeking a third term, or Yankton businessman Jay Williams (D). Following release of the Access Hollywood tapes, Thune was quick to respond, tweeting, "Donald Trump should withdraw and Mike Pence should be our nominee effective immediately." Thune and Williams met a couple of times: for a forum hosted by South Dakota Public Broadcasting and AARP on Oct. 13 and for a debate on Oct. 24 hosted by the Sioux Falls Downtown Rotary Club (1, 2). The FEC reported for 2015-16 the Thune campaign made total disbursements of $4.2 million compared to $66,555 for Williams (>). Thune easily defeated Williams. See also: Stu Whitney.
