Cory Booker Delivers Winning Performance at Last Night’s First Democratic Debate

Cory Addressed Key Issues, Was Most Searched About Candidate of the Night

Newark, NJ – Last night, Cory delivered a strong, winning performance at the first Democratic primary debate. As coverage and reviews of the debate come in, it’s clear: Cory won the debate and inspired Democrats across the country by standing out on answer after answer.

Read excerpts of the coverage below:

Vox: Cory Booker showed he can be a contender
Booker’s advantage was in style and delivery — he’s a good speaker who can command attention, weave in personal anecdotes, and combine outrage-inducing and inspiring rhetoric.

“I live in a low-income black and brown community and see every day this economy is not working for average Americans,” he said in his first answer. “I think I’m the only one, I hope I am, that had seven people shot in their neighborhood just last week,” he said later to a gun control question.

Booker spoke compellingly on a range of issues without getting lost in policy wonk weeds. He spoke about Immigration and Customs Enforcement “ripping” away families from children, and said that too many health care companies are “profiteering off of the pain of people in America.” But he also offered a positive message in his closing statement, saying he would beat President Trump “by calling this country to a sense of common purpose again.”

Google Trends — which tracks, in real time, what people are searching for — showed that he got the biggest and most frequent spikes in interest of the major candidates onstage. Again and again, when Booker started talking, a lot of people Googled him.

FiveThirtyEight: What Went Down On Night One Of The First Democratic Debates
Here are my final thoughts in terms of Booker’s performance: He definitely had a strong night. He spoke the most of anyone on the stage (and seemed to get a lot of google searches) and conveyed, I think, the kind of calm competence that is core to his brand. His closing statement told the same story that his presidential announcement did, about being given the opportunity to live in the neighborhood in which he grew up because of the work of activists fighting housing discrimination against black families. Will be very interested to see what kind of poll bump he might get for this.

    Politico: Who won the debate?
Booker spoke for nearly 11 minutes, more than any other candidate. He was a key part of nearly every issue debate. He was one of three candidates to give part of an answer in Spanish.

He also gave impassioned answers on immigration, race and gun violence, referencing a man he knew who was shot and killed in his neighborhood last year.

“It is time we have bold actions and a bold agenda,” Booker said, touting his plan to strengthen gun control laws. “I will get that done as president of the United States because this is not about policy. This is personal.”

Wall Street Journal: Doug Thornell: “Booker needed a breakout moment and he got it.”
“The night’s big winners were Senators Booker and Warren,” said Democratic strategist Doug Thornell. “Booker needed a breakout moment and he got it. He demonstrated deep policy acumen, passion, and made a very effective appeal to black and brown communities. He brought his A-game.”

Politico: 7 big takeaways from the first Democratic debate
    Booker shines

Cory Booker’s team has long promised the New Jersey senator would shine on the debate stage as a gifted speaker and storyteller. He did.

At 10 minutes and 50 seconds, Booker notched more speaking time than any other candidate on that crowded stage. And according to a chart published by Google, Booker saw the most search traffic during the debates. Overall, his performance struck a balance of introducing himself to a broader audience and leaning into race issues, while detailing his policies, including on guns.

“If you need a license to drive a car, you should need a license to buy and own a firearm,” Booker said to big applause.

Booker needed a breakout in this debate. Since entering the race on Feb. 1, he’s failed to break from single digits in polling, even after pouring resources into early state organization and rolling out a series of policy proposals. Before Wednesday, Booker’s biggest moment came last week in a tangle with Joe Biden over comments the former vice president made about segregationist senators.

CBS News: New Hampshire voters impressed by Cory Booker and Julián Castro on first debate night
At a watch party in West Ossipee, New Hampshire, voters were impressed by Cory Booker and Julián Castro's performance on the first Democratic debate night. Nicole Sganga reports on the takeaways -- and how voters are reacting to the overwhelming amount of candidates.

MTV News: Cory Booker Fought For Black Trans Women At The Democratic Debates
As Pride Month nears its conclusion, Booker was unequivocal in his support of LGBTQ+ Americans, citing the prevailing fear among LGBTQ+ children to simply attend their schools, and ongoing violence against the trans community: “We do not talk enough about trans Americans, especially African-American trans Americans and the incredibly high rates of murder right now,” he said.

    [...]

But Booker, who was the most vocal candidate of the entire evening, was alone in using his platform to highlight this issue in front of a national audience. His support didn’t go unnoticed by members and prominent advocates from the LGBTQ+ community, either.

Booker’s advocacy arrives at a crucial juncture for LGBTQ+ rights in America. In May, the Trump administration proposed a new regulation to exclude “gender identity” from protections against healthcare discrimination, a similar proposal from the Department of Housing and Urban Development that would leave the community more vulnerable to homelessness, and took an avowed stance against the Equality Act, a bill designed to prevent discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.

WHDH Boston: “Senator Cory Booker, another one of the winners tonight. He had a strong night.”

WMUR Manchester: Booker “helped himself a good bit. He really shows his onstage presence and political skills.”

New Hampshire Union Leader: “Cory Booker at his sharpest, most passionate tonight talking about gun violence in his Newark, N.J. neighborhood and author of one of the most ambitious gun control plans in this race.”

Cory 2020 Campaign Manager Addisu Demissie’s Reaction to First Democratic Primary Debate

Newark, NJ – Cory 2020 Campaign Manager Addisu Demissie issued the following statement after the conclusion of the first Democratic primary debate tonight:

“Viewers tuning in for the first time tonight saw exactly why Cory Booker is at the top of the list of candidates Democratic voters across the country are considering. Cory clearly won this debate, standing out on answer after answer — from gun violence prevention to immigration to criminal justice reform to how he would deal with the toughest foreign policy challenges as commander-in-chief. Cory successfully introduced himself, articulated why he’s best prepared to beat Donald Trump, and provided a clear vision for creating a more just and fair nation for all.

“Cory was poised, passionate, and delivered concise, well-reasoned answers that show he is ready to take on Donald Trump in a general election and ready to serve as president.

“In a word, Cory was presidential.”

Online search traffic for Cory spiked dramatically over the course of the debate, outpacing the other Democrats in the race:

Delaney Shines at First DNC Debate

MIAMI, FL –  John Delaney stood out on stage at the first Democratic primary debate.Delaney led the discussion on the need to create a universal health care system that preserves private options. Delaney also stressed his $4 trillion climate plan and his living wage plan.

Delaney’s National Press Secretary, Michael Starr Hopkins, releases the following statement:

“What we just witnessed was leadership on full display. Unlike many of the candidates in this race, Congressman Delaney understands that we won’t win back the White House with impossible promises and bumper sticker solutions. We’ll beat President Trump by offering real, practical solutions that can be implemented on day one of aDelaney Presidency. Tonight was a huge win, not just for our campaign, but for the American people. Facts still matter.

“It’s good to see other candidates following Delaney’s lead on the need for a universal health care system that doesn’t make private insurance illegal. John wasn’t afraid to stand up, speak the truth - even if it got him boos in California earlier this month - and now others are following suit.

“If I was the President, I would get off Twitter and pick up a briefing book because tonight was just a taste of what he can expect in the general election.”

Delaney’s answers and closing statement are transcribed below.

    On health care:

"They like their private health insurance by the way. It should be noted that 100 million Americans …

"I think we should be the party that keeps what’s working and fixes what's broken. I mean doesn't that make sense? We should give everyone in this country health care as a basic human right for free. Full stop. But we should also give them the option to buy private insurance. Why do we have to stand for taking away something from people?

"Also its bad policy. If you go to every hospital in this country and you ask them one question, which is how would it have been for you last year if every one of your bills were paid at the Medicare rate? Every single hospital administrator said they would close. And the Medicare for All bill requires payments to stay at current Medicare rates.

"So to some extent we're basically supporting a bill that will have every hospital closed. I mean my dad was a union electrician, right, I actually grew up in a working-class family, he loved the health care that the IBEW gave him and I just always think about my dad and anything I would do from a policy perspective he’d look at me and he’d say good job John for getting healthcare for every American, but why are you taking my healthcare away."

    On a living wage:

"I think we need to do real things to help American workers and the American people. This is the issue that all of us hear on the campaign trail. We need to make sure everyone has a living wage, and I’ve called for a doubling of the earned income tax credit, raising the minimum wage, and creating paid family leave. That will create a situation where people actually have a living wage. That gets right to workers. Then we have got to fix our public education system. It's not delivering the results our kids need, nor is college, and post high school career and technical training programs are doing that. You know, I'm very different than everyone else here on stage. Prior to being in Congress, I was an entrepreneur. I started two businesses. I created thousands of jobs. I spent my whole career helping small to mid-sized businesses all over the country. Five-thousand of them I supported. The Obama Administration gave me an award for lending to disadvantaged communities. I know how to create jobs. We need a short term strategy which is to put money in the pockets of workers with earned income tax credit, raising the minimum wage, and creating paid family leave, and then we need to  have a long term strategy to make sure this country is competitive and we are creating jobs everywhere in this country."

    On climate change:

"All of the economists agree that a carbon pricing mechanism works. You just have to do it right. You can’t put a price on carbon, raise energy prices, and not give the money back to the American people.

"My proposal is to put a price on carbon, give a dividend back to the American people. It goes out one pocket, back in the other. I can get that passed my first year as President with a coalition of every Democrat in the Congress and the Republicans who live in coastal states. The Republicans in Florida, they actually care about this issue. This has got to be our way forward if we are actually serious about this issue."

    On impeaching President Trump:
    "I guess there’s always a first.

"I don’t think anyone is above the law. I don't think anyone is above the law, including the president. I support Speaker Pelosi’s decisions that she’s making in the House of Representatives right now as Speaker. I think she knows more about the decision as to whether to impeach the president than any of the 2020 candidates combined. I do think no one’s above the law and this president - who is lawless - should not be above the law.
"But I will tell you, Rachel, the one thing when you’re out doing as much campaigning as I’ve done - 400 events, all 99 counties in Iowa - this is not the number 1 issue the American people ask us about, it's not. They want to know what we’re going to do for healthcare, how we’re going to lower pharmaceutical prices, how we’re going to build infrastructure, what we’re going to do to create jobs in their communities.
"You know last year in our country, 80% of the money for startup businesses went to 50 counties in this country. There are over 3,000 counties in this country. That’s what they care about. They care about what’s going on in public schools. They care about what’s going on with jobs in their communities, with their pay, with their healthcare, with infrastructure. These are the issues, these kinds of kitchen table, pocketbook issues, are actually what most Americans care about.
"They want to know how we are going to solve these problems."

    On bipartisanship:

"I think we need to get things done that’s why I believe we need to operate in a bipartisan manner. Listen, I’ll sign into law bills that come into the White House that are passed on a party-line basis, absolutely, but all the transformative things we’ve ever done in this country’s history have happened when huge majorities of the American people get behind them. Which is why we need real solutions not impossible promises. We need to put forth ideas that work whether it's on health care, creating universal healthcare so that every American gets healthcare but not running on making private insurance illegal. The gun issue is related. The gun safety issue is related because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been with folks in western Maryland, and they’ve said to me, 'you know Democrats don't do anything for us, Republicans don't do anything for us. You fight all the time so they vote on that single issue.' If we become the party of getting things done for the American people, real solutions not impossible promises."

    Closing statement:
"Together we are on a mission. We are on a mission to find the America that is lost. Lost from infighting, lost from inaction. We are so much better than this. We are a country that used to do things. We saved the world. We created the American dream for millions of people like myself, the grandson of immigrants, the son of a union electrician, who went on to become a successful business leader and create thousands of jobs. But we did these things with real solutions, not with impossible promises. And those are the roots we have to get back to. I am running for President to solve these problems. To build infrastructure, to fix our broken healthcare system, to invest in communities that have been left behind. To improve public education. I just don't want to be your president to be your president, I want to be your president to do the job. This is not about me. This about getting America working again."

Tulsi Gabbard Shines in Breakthrough Performance at NBC’s Democratic Debate

MIAMI, FL — Tulsi Gabbard, Hawaii Congresswoman and presidential candidate, performance was described as “the most composed and authentic” by Meagan McCain, as she stayed focused on her message of preventing a war with Iran and ending the war in Afghanistan at last’s night Democratic Debate. She has been trending online throughout the country ever since with her name surging to the very top of Google’s top searched candidate list for night one.

She was asked if she would rejoin the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, and she answered yes while stressing the dire consequences of war.

"War with Iran would be worse than war with Iraq," said Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran and first female combat veteran to run for president. "Donald Trump and his chickenhawk cabinet—Mike Pompeo, John Bolton, and others—are creating a situation where a spark would light a war with Iran. Trump needs to get back into the Iran deal, swallow his pride, and put America first."

The Drudge Report's instant poll showed Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) as the biggest winner of the first night of the Democratic presidential debates, with nearly 40 percent of the vote and more than 70,000 voters.

According to VOX News, “Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who served in the Iraq War, sparred with Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan over foreign policy — and eventually won the upper hand when she corrected Ryan for saying the Taliban, not al-Qaeda, was behind the 9/11 attacks.

These are the moments that caused search traffic for these candidates to skyrocket.”

Jay Inslee Receives Praise for First Democratic Debate Performance

Miami, FL - In tonight’s debate, Governor Jay Inslee proved that he is the only candidate giving climate change the focus it needs, and climate activists, progressive organizations, and elected officials took notice. Inslee received widespread praise for his emphasis on defeating climate change, as well as his record supporting Labor and achieving progressive results for Washingtonians as governor.

Jay Inslee has the most extensive record of any 2020 candidate passing and implementing bold, progressive laws and initiatives. He understands that America can’t wait any longer to fight climate change, make healthcare affordable, or get the economy working for everyday Americans again. The next president must be able to achieve results immediately, and Inslee has the record to show he can deliver.

Jay Inslee is smart to talk about collective bargaining in his first answer. He speaks directly to a key Dem constituency with a strong first answer – and he still hasn’t talked about his signature issue yet.

    Ilyse Hogue, President, NARAL
.@JayInslee jumps into healthcare fray to make the point that abortion must be covered by all insurance -- private and public -- and as Governor of Washington, he made that happen. #DemDebate

Kudos to @JayInslee who is leading by going right after the filibuster as a roadblock to tackling climate change. Again, if we're not going to take this on, we're not going to get anything done.

    Jennifer Haberkorn, LA Times
Only Gov. Jay Inslee suggested getting rid of the filibuster -- none of the members of Congress up there. #DemDebate

    Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA)
My guv, @JayInslee, is all true when it comes to #ClimateChange. He really knows this issue, cares about it deeply, and has a real plan to address it.  This is HIS issue.

Harold Meyerson, Executive Editor, The American Prospect
Inslee realizes way to be the climate change candidate is to extol unions. The balancing act that the Democrats will need this year.

Kevin Collins, Co-founder & Chief Research Officer, Survey 160
Inslee's a walking, talking Blue-Green alliance. Honestly not a bad strategy in a Democratic primary campaign.

Susan Rice, former National Security Advisor
Candidates, why is @BilldeBlasio the only candidate to mention Russia as a top threat?? And kudos to @JayInslee for telling home truths about Trump.

    Alex Wagner, CBS News
Inslee is right infosfar as the only issue that is being debated tonight that will matter in 25, 50, 100 years is climate.

    Alex Seitz-Wald, NBC News
Get yourself a man that looks at you like Jay Inslee looks at a climate change question.

    Binyamin Appelbaum, New York Times
It's fascinating that none of the candidates -- save Inslee, I guess -- seems to have any interest in attacking Donald Trump, who happens to be the president, the bete noire of the Democratic base -- and the guy they'd face in the general election.

    Stephen Wolf, Daily Kos
Inslee tells the goddamn truth: The greatest geopolitical threat to the United States is Donald Trump

    Dan Rather, Journalist
If there is a sleeper in this race, I wonder about Jay Inslee. Impressive record. Impressive plan about climate change. I wonder if he can gain traction...

    Jigar Shaw, Clean energy entrepreneur
"Tonight Jay Inslee showed that Democrats can and must be the party of bold climate solutions. He's got that plan. He's also got an impressive record leading the state with #1 economy in the nation."

    Tom Matzzie, Clean Energy CEO
"Jay Inslee has brought the climate emergency to the national stage where it should be. And his record of making change as governor - in jobs and wage growth, health care, voting rights, gun safety and more - is what America needs."

Andrew Light, University Professor, George Mason University & Former Senior Climate Change Official, US Department of State
“No one on this stage took climate change as seriously as Jay Inslee. If you care about this issue, you need to look at his record, his commitment, and his determination to dig deep and create the opportunities we need to solve this crisis.”

    V. John White, Legislative Director of the Clean Power Campaign
“Governor Inslee tonight provided a clear and concise vision of where we need to go on climate, clean energy and the Evergreen Economy. More importantly, he has taken the time to develop a series of detailed and thoughtful proposals that should become the Democratic Party’s road map to economic innovation and recovery, and protecting our country and our climate for our children and grandchildren.”

    Channing Dutton, Activist
“Inslee is a standout in a crowded field.  I don’t need a crystal ball to tell me I’ll be voting for Jay Inslee in Iowa caucuses.  I love my kids and know he will protect their climate future.”

Christine Curry, Founder-Iowa Water Festival 2019
“Jay Inslee just rocked it at the debates.  We need his strong leadership and he’s 100% perfect on the environment.”

Inslee Highlights Climate Leadership and Progressive Achievements in First Dem Debate

Miami, FL – Tonight, Aisling Kerins, Campaign Manager for Inslee for America, released the following statement:

"Tonight, Jay Inslee successfully introduced his clear vision and record of progressive success in Washington state to the American people. He laid out why climate change needs to be the top issue for the next president - and why he has the strongest plan and best record to defeat the climate crisis. Governor Inslee also succeeded tonight in telling the story of progressive success in Washington state: expanding health care, welcoming immigrants, strengthening unions and building the best economy in America. It's clear from the applause in Miami that voters are looking for a leader with clear priorities on climate change and a record of progressive success.

"But in Miami, a city that will literally slip under the sea if we don't act, NBC and the DNC spent less than 8 minutes on the existential crisis of our time. The failure to fully address climate change is unacceptable. Tonight made clear that we need a climate debate now. The DNC failed to focus on this existential crisis, and that they must immediately allow a full debate on climate change."

    Donald J. Trump for President
    June 26, 2019

Trump Campaign Statement On 1st Democrat Debate

“This debate was the best argument for President Trump’s re-election and should really be counted as an in-kind contribution to the President’s campaign.  The Democrats proposed a radical government takeover of American society that would demolish the American dream so many are gaining access to under the growing Trump economy.

“The far-left, socialist policies Democrats embraced tonight were akin to a mutual political suicide pact.  They want to throw 200 million people off their current private healthcare plans, put them into a government-run system that would eliminate choice, and crush innocent Americans with an enormous tax burden to pay for it. At the same time, Democrats wholeheartedly support giving taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal immigrants and decriminalizing illegal border crossings. They support a $93 trillion energy plan that would cost hundreds of thousands of jobs and cost each American household $600,000 in new taxes.

“Democrats also tried to cynically exploit the heart-wrenching images of the tragic deaths of a father and child near our southern border. The truth is that these same Democrats first denied there was a crisis at the border, then claimed it was manufactured, and now won’t work with President Trump to fix it, choosing to slow walk needed humanitarian aid for illegal immigrant children. Rather than encouraging more people to make the treacherous journey to enter our country illegally with promises of healthcare and amnesty, Democrats should join with the President to enforce our border so that fewer people take such dangerous risks.

“These Democrat policies, which feature government control over virtually every aspect of Americans’ daily lives, bear striking resemblance to those from authoritarian regimes like Cuba and Venezuela. Perhaps it's fitting that Democrats held their first debate in Miami, Florida, where so many Latinos have fled the ravages of socialism and understand its devastating effect on society in a real and personal way.

“Under President Trump, we have the strongest economy in modern history with almost six million jobs created, unemployment hitting historic lows, nearly 500,000 news manufacturing jobs created, and paychecks growing at the fastest pace in a decade -- twice as fast for low- and middle-income Americans. President Trump will continue to work to secure our border and enforce immigration laws, protecting innocent Americans from the ravages of illegal drugs and crime.  He has signed into law common-sense criminal justice reform and supports giving people a second chance.  He has unleashed American energy, making us the number one energy producer in the world.  And President Trump will protect the right to private insurance, fight to protect those with pre-existing conditions, and continue to lower prescription drug and healthcare prices.

“President Trump is making America great and will keep America great.”

RNC Statement on Day 1 of the Democrat Debate

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement in response to the first night of the Democrat primary debate:

"Tonight, 2020 Democrats argued over fringe ideas that are completely out of touch with our values and would have a negative impact on Americans’ everyday lives," said Chairwoman McDaniel.

"Voters recognize the success of President Trump’s pro-growth policies, in contrast to the Democrats’ radical proposals like a government takeover of health care, open borders, no protections for human life, and massive tax hikes. We stand with President Trump as he continues to fight for Americans and deliver a historic comeback for our country."

Inslee Fundraising Surges Following Debate Performance

Inslee for America sees best fundraising day ever, 10,000% increase in Google search interest

    Miami, FL
    - Governor Jay Inslee’s fundraising soared in the 24 hours following Wednesday’s first primary debate. Following a debate performance described as a “home run” and “standout,” Inslee saw a large increase in digital interaction, new donors, and website visits.

On debate day through noon Thursday, the Inslee for America campaign saw:
    • Record number of donations in a 24-hour period
    • 9,872% increase in Google search interest over previous 7 day average
    • 5 times as many new donors as the average day in the previous week
    • 470% increase in site visitors over previous 7 day average
    • 3 times the amount of Twitter impressions over past 7 day average
“Online enthusiasm reached new peaks last night as a direct result of the Governor’s debate performance highlighting his strong commitment to defeating climate change and his long record of progressive accomplishments in Washington state,” said Travis Mockler, Digital Director for Inslee for America. “This is a sign of the growing momentum for Gov. Inslee’s campaign.”

Inslee has led the conversation on climate change throughout the campaign, and yesterday’s increase in digital engagement and donations proves that his message resonates with voters. A recent Bloomberg analysis determined he has raised the issue more than any other candidate on Twitter. Other parts of Inslee’s social media presence have also been ranked among the best in the field.
