Nov. 9, 2017 - Activists
including many students filled the ground floor of Hart Senate Office
Building in a well-organized protest to urge Congress to adopt a
"clean" DREAM Act. On Sept. 5 the Trump Administration announced
its decision to rescind the DACA program in six months, while calling
on
Congress to act (+).
Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jeff Flake (R-AZ),
and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had introduced the Dream Act of 2017 on July
20. Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Jim Lankford (R-OK) and Orrin
Hatch (R-UT)
introduced a conservative proposal on Sept. 25. Their SUCCEED Act
(Solution for Undocumented Children through Careers, Employment,
Education, and Defending our nation) is described as "a solution for
undocumented children" but
with "more rigorous requirements for undocumented children to earn and
keep legal status" than the DREAM Act. |
