REPUBLICAN PICK UP
Notes: Gov. Peter Shumlin (D)'s retirement opened up the seat.
  In the Aug. 9 primaries voters selected Lt. Gov. Phil Scott (R) with 60.5% of the vote and former state Transportation Secretary Sue Minter (D) with 51.2%.  Scott went on to defeat Minter for a Republican pick up. 

Scott was a better known quantity, having served 10 years in the state Senate and six years as lieutenant governor, while Minter had served four terms in the state House and in addition to her more recent experience as Transportation Secretary.  Democrats did win the other partisan statewide races.

Seven Days reported campaigns and groups spent a total of approximately $13.34 million on the governor's race, the second most ever for a Vermont campaign.  (This included around $4 million spent by defeated primary candidates).  The Minter campaign spent $2.04 million and was aided by $1.4 million in spending by Our Vermont (from the Democratic Governors Association); the Scott campaign spent $1.61 million and was aided by $3.02 million in spending by A Stronger Vermont (from the Republican Governors Association) (>).
