 VA Dept. of Elections

Notes: Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) was term-limited.  Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) defeated Ed Gillespie to hold the seat.  Democrats kept all statewide offices and made gains in the state legislature.  Trump was a significant factor in the race; although he endorsed Gillespie, Gillespie kept his distance, making no appearances with the president.

In the June 13 primaries, Gillespie edged Corey Stewart, chair of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, by 43.7% to 42.5% and 13.8% for Frank Wagner, while Northam defeated former U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello by 55.9% to 44.1%.

In the general election, the two major party candidates debated three times: at the Virginia Bar Association summer meeting at the Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs on July 22, broadcast by PBS (>); at Capital One headquarters in McLean on Sept. 19, hosted by the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Schar School at George Mason University, and broadcast by WRC-TV NBC 4 (>); and at the University of Virginia in Wise in Southwest Virginia on Oct. 9 (>).

Virginia Public Access Project reported this was the most expensive campaign ever for governor of Virginia.  Total spending of $65 million by the two major campaigns topped the $60 million spent in 2013; the Northam campaign outspent the Gillespie campaign by $36.5 million to $29.1 million, while Hyra's campaign spent just $76,370 (>).
