"I would actually argue that having been a member of the minority party in the legislature is excellent training. You can't dictate to people what you're going to do. You have to convince them."

"So many people in our state are hurting and they're trapped on an economic treadmill where they can't get ahead financially. They work multiple jobs and do everything they can, yet they are marching in place or going backwards. They need for the future"

- Marvin Nelson

Biography  [born June 4, 1958]
nelsonfornd.com/about-marvin

Marvin was raised by his parents, Marlowe and Marion—along with a shepherd cross, Purp—on a diversified farm northeast of Rugby. Crops on the farm included wheat, barley, oats, flax, and corn; and livestock consisted of cattle—both beef and dairy—hogs, mink, and chickens. Along with his brother, Mark, and sister, MariJean, the family attended Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby.

Marlowe was township treasurer pretty much his whole adult life and served as a County Commissioner in Pierce County. Marlowe and Marion were both active in Civil Defense.

Marvin graduated from Rugby High School, having played French Horn in the band, and was active in debate and FFA. In FFA, Marvin was a gold crop judger, competed nationally in both Land and Horticulture judging, was a part of two state championQuiz Contest teams. He attended NDSU-BBIF (now Dakota College at Bottineau) and transferred to NDSU, where he earned a BS in Entomology. During college, Marvin worked summers as an apiary inspector for the Department of Agriculture. He attended graduate school at NDSU before becoming a crop consultant in the Rolla area.

Marvin met his wife, Susan, in Fargo and they were married there at Community Baptist Church before moving to Rolla. There, along with his brother and some friends, they built the Clothing Connection, a store on Main. They still operate the consignment shop, along with his work as an agricultural consultant. That business offers services like soil testing, crop monitoring, and electromagnetic zoning of fields.

Marvin serves as an elder at Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church in Rolette, and on the Board of Directors for the Church of the Lutheran Brethren in America. He has been active in both Farmers Union and Farm Bureau, the Agricultural Consultants of North Dakota, Northwest Landowners Association, and the Salted Lands Council. He also plays alto horn in the Minot Brass Band.

Marvin represents District 9 in the North Dakota House of Representatives. He was first elected in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. District 9 is the whole of Rolette County, the only legislative district that is also a county.

He has served three sessions on the Industry, Business and Labor Committee, and on the Natural Resources, Agriculture, Transportation, and Audit and Fiscal Review Committee. During the Interim, he has served on the Health Care Reform, Taxation, Health Services, Water Topics, Tribal and State Relations Committees. He currently serves as chairman for Tribal and State Relations.

He has been elected to Legislative Management for two sessions, and also serves on the House Rules Committee. He has been appointed to the Crop Protection Product Harmonization and Registration Board.

Marvin and Susan have two grown children. Their son Carl lives in Fargo, having graduated from Concordia in Business Information Management. Their daughter Jessica is an accountant who lives in West Fargo with her husband, Josh Dryer, and their two daughters, Olivia, who is two and Jocelyn who just joined the family February 29th.
