 ND Secretary of State

Notes: Gov. Jack Dalrymple (R)'s retirement opened up this seat.  Republicans won all eight statewide races from president to public service commissioner by very lopsided margins; the Democratic candidates failed to reach 30% of the vote in any of the races.

Although delegates to the Republican state convention in April endorsed North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, Burgum bested Stenehjem in the June 14 primary by 59.47% to 38.59% to secure the nomination.  Nelson faced no competition for the Democratic nomination.
