 MT Sec. of State

Notes: Gov. Steve Bullock (D) won a second term despite being
substantially outspent by the campaign of Bozeman businessman Greg Gianforte (R).  Helena Independent Record deemed this–"The costliest governor's race in state history"– as its biggest story of 2016.  Gianforte spent $5.8 million of his own money on the campaign.  According to the National Institute on Money in State Politics, Gianforte's campaign outraised Bullock's by $8.6 million to $3.3 million (>).  However, outside groups weighed in as well, pushing total spending on the race to over $15 million according to KRTV-3.  The Center for Public Integrity reported that a total of $9 million was spent to run a total of 65,074 TV ads (>).  That included $4.5 million from the Gianforte campaign and $263,000 from RGA Right Direction PAC and $1.4 million from the Bullock campaign and $2.8 million from Good Jobs PAC (DGA).  The two candidates debated on Sept. 19 at Montana State University in Billings (>) and on Oct. 8 hosted by MTN at KRTV studios in Great Falls (>).
