Republican Intensity on Display in Ohio Primary

548,751 More Republican Ballots Cast Than Democrat Ballots

Washington, D.C. – Last night, Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance won the Ohio primary in a hard-fought victory, but his race wasn’t the only race on the ballot. Democrat primaries for a slew of offices were also up for a vote, but you wouldn’t know that from the voter turnout. As of now, there were 548,751 more Republican ballots cast than Democrat ballots. Yikes.

Clearly, Ohioans, like other Americans, are rejecting the Democrats’ radical agenda that is failing families and communities and want them out of office asap. The intensity is on the Republican side and will carry over into November.

Statement from NRSC Spokeswoman Lizzie Litzow: “This number reflects the energy and intensity on the Republican side to keep Ohio red. And it’s a precursor to a big victory to come in November! I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of this throughout the summer in other primaries around the country, especially if Democrats keep up what they’re doing.”

Chairman Rick Scott's Statement on J.D. Vance's Primary Win in Ohio

Washington, D.C. — NRSC Chairman Rick Scott released the following statement on J.D. Vance’s primary win in Ohio.

Statement from NRSC Chairman Rick Scott: “Congratulations to J.D. Vance on winning the Republican primary in Ohio. It was a hard-fought victory that reflects the energy and intensity on the Republican side to keep Ohio red. And it’s a precursor to a big victory to come in November!

“Two-faced phony career politician Tim Ryan is too radical for the Buckeye State, and Ohio voters know it. While in Congress, his record shows he fully supports Joe Biden’s failing agenda that is hurting Ohio families and the working class. His constant flip-flopping is giving Ohioans whiplash and his refusal to take responsibility for the Democrat agenda that he’s supported shows that’s he unfit for office. Inflation is skyrocketing, gas prices are up, taxes are rising all thanks to Tim Ryan’s agenda in Washington. Ohioans are fed up. They deserve a leader like J.D. Vance who will fight to ensure Ohio continues to be a great place for hard-working families and job creators to succeed for generations to come.”

DSCC Statement On Tim Ryan’s Primary Victory In OH’s Senate Race

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Sen. Gary Peters released the following statement on Tim Ryan’s primary victory in the Ohio Senate race:

“Tim is a tenacious champion for working Ohioans: he understands that all work has dignity, and in the Senate he’ll keep fighting to make sure all working families have a fair shot at success. While the out-of-touch millionaires in the GOP primary have spent months leveling vicious and embarrassing attacks against each other, Tim has focused on the issues that matter most to the people of his state and putting their interests first – and those are the values he’ll bring to serving in the U.S. Senate.”

ODP Statement Congratulating Tim Ryan On His Victory In The Democratic U.S. Senate Primary

Columbus, OH – Following the results of the Ohio Democratic U.S. Senate primary, Ohio Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Walters released the following statement congratulating Tim Ryan on his victory:

“Congratulations to Tim Ryan for winning the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Tim understands that all work has dignity, and he has spent his career fighting for a fair shot for Ohio workers. As Ohio’s next U.S. Senator, Tim will keep working alongside Sherrod Brown to level the playing field and invest in our state so that we can out-compete China and create more opportunities for working families in every corner of our state—a far cry from any of the unaccountable and out of touch millionaires vying for the GOP nomination in this race. The stakes of this election could not be higher, and we look forward to doing all we can to flip this seat and send a second pro-worker champion to the Senate.”

Ohio Democratic Party Statement On The Results Of The GOP U.S. Senate Primary

Following the results of the Ohio GOP U.S. Senate primary, Ohio Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Walters released the following statement:

“It’s no wonder that an elitist like California Vance admits he feels ‘out of place’ in Ohio after leaving the state behind and moving to San Francisco, scoring a New York City book deal to cash in on Ohioans’ pain and making untold millions from a Netflix Hollywood movie deal. California Vance is an elitist and a fraud who blamed Ohio workers for their own hardships while absolving unfair trade deals and giant corporations of their role in outsourcing jobs and devastating Ohio communities. But it’s not just Ohioans who are fair game – California Vance actually thinks our whole country is ‘kind of a joke.’ Now, this Silicon Valley elitist is looking for another ticket out of Ohio so he can move back to Washington D.C. to become California’s third Senator. We look forward to holding California Vance accountable so every voter knows he’s an out-of-touch elitist who left Ohio behind and does not have Ohio values.”

  • Vance’s Central Argument In Hillbilly Elegy Is That “Hillbillies Themselves Are To Blame For Their Troubles.” According to the New Republic, “Vance’s central argument is that hillbillies themselves are to blame for their troubles. ‘Our religion has changed,’ he laments, to a version ‘heavy on emotional rhetoric’ and ‘light on the kind of social support’ that he needed as a child. He also faults ‘a peculiar crisis of masculinity.’ This brave new world, in sore need of that old time religion and manly men, is apparently to blame for everything from his mother’s drug addiction to the region’s economic crisis. ‘We spend our way to the poorhouse,’ he writes. ‘We buy giant TVs and iPads. Our children wear nice clothes thanks to high-interest credit cards and payday loans. We purchase homes we don’t need, refinance them for more spending money, and declare bankruptcy, often leaving them full of garbage in our wake. Thrift is inimical to our being.’” [New Republic, 11/17/16]

  • J.D. Vance Said The Reason People Were Not Working Is Some Perceived Unfairness But It Was A “Lie” That “All The Jobs Went To The Chinese.” According to The Vindicator, Vance wrote in Hillbilly Elegy, “We talk about the value of hard work, but tell ourselves that the reason we’re not working is some perceived unfairness: (Barack) Obama shut down the coal mines or all the jobs went to the Chinese. These are the lies we tell ourselves to solve the cognitive dissonance.” [The Vindicator, 4/28/22]
