Notes:
U.S. Sen. Todd Young (R) easliy won re-election, defeating Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott (D) as well as James Sceniak (L), who works as a behavioral therapist for autistic children.

Young and McDermott were both unopposed in the May 3 primaries.  Under Indiana Code, to appear on the May 3 ballot candidates were required to submit petitions signed by 4,500 voters, including at least 500 voters from each of the nine congressional districts by the Feb. 4 filing deadline.  The Indiana Election Commission, at its meeting on Feb. 18, 2022 ruled that several candidates had submitted insufficient signatures to appear on the May 3 primary ballot (>).  Among those ruled ineligible were Republican Danny Niederberger, an accountant, and Democrat Haneefah Khaaliq, an attorney, who went on to run write-in campaigns.

Young was elected to Congress in 2010, defeating U.S. Rep. Baron Hill (D); he served three terms representing IN-9, then was elected to the Senate in 2016.  Earlier in his career, Young
serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Young worked for two years on the staff of Sen. Richard Lugar, was a management consultant and served as assistant deputy prosecutor in Orange County, Indiana.  He has impressive academic credentials, having earned his B.S. from the U.S. Naval Academy, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, an M.A. from the University of London, and a J.D. from Indiana University.

McDermott was Hammond's longest serving mayor; he started in Jan. 2004 and was serving his fifth term.  Hammond, a city in the Northwest corner of the state in the Chicago metropolitan area, has a population of just under 75,000 and is the eighth largest city in the state.  Earlier McDermott practiced law, and he served six years in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear submariner.  During the primary McDermott drew national attention for an ad promoting cannabis legalization, released on April 20, in which he smoked marijuana.

Young, McDermott and Sceniak participated in the Indiana Debate Commission debate in the studios of WFYI-TV in Indianapolis on Oct. 16 (>).  Young and McDermott participated in a forum consisting of separate interviews (Young on Oct. 23 and McDermott on Oct. 24) hosted by Nexstar Media (FOX59 and CBS4); Sceniak was excluded (>).

This race was extremely lopsided financially.  The Young campaign raised $14.9 million, spent $11.0 million and had cash on hand of $4.0 million compared to $1.3 million raised and spent for the McDermott campaign (>).
