Tammy Duckworth, Lt. Colonel (Retired), is a 23-year veteran of the Army National Guard. In 2004, the Black Hawk she was piloting was shot down in Iraq, costing her both of her legs. After recovering, she served as Director of Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs, and has been a leading voice for Veterans in the U.S. House and Senate.
 
Duckworth was the first US Senator to give birth while serving in office and now has two young daughters.
