Sept. 4, 2021 - Kevin
Paffrath, the leading Democratic recall
candidate challenging Gov. Gavin Newsom,
went to Newsom's rally in Culver City but
could not get in, so he talked with people
outside. Paffrath describes himself as a
John F. Kennedy-style Democrat. He
stated:
"JFK-style Democrat means
investing in California, investing in
people, teaching financial education,
mental health in our schools, breaking the
cycle of poverty, crime and homelessness
by providing the services that people
need.... [W]hen we actually provide the
services that people need and we deal with
our water and fire crises, then we can
reduce the cost to administer a very
burdensome government right now, and then
we can finally lower taxes, but we've got
to start by investing Californians first,
and that's what JFK did."
Wkipedia describes Paffrath as a "YouTuber,
financial analyst, landlord, and real estate
broker." Paffrath said he finds YouTube the
most effective means of communicating his
message:
"by far because people can
listen to a full idea rather than just the
30-second clip. Most of the issues that we
have in our country take much more than 30
seconds to establish a position on...
defund the police, school choice. These,
these aren't yes or no questions as much
as people would like them to be. They're
very nuanced."

Paffrath said he has learned
from his campaign that:
"Parties are more powerful than
ideas. And I think that's very dangerous.
So for example if you're a Democrat
running in a recall against the Democrat,
it's almost impossible to get any
Democratic staff—attorneys, campaign
finance whatever—because then they would
be forever labeled in industry as somebody
who's supported a recall against the
Democrat, right. And so this is where it
doesn't matter how good your ideas are,
that doesn't matter. What matters is A)
party politics, and B) media. The media
loves fireworks; the media loves fireworks
and this is why Newsom versus Elder is so
popular because they love fireworks. A
moderate candidate has a very difficult
time getting press attention. So, this is
why we have I think such extremism in
politics today, partially because the
media but that's also what people want to
view so you can't blame the viewers.
Chicken or egg."
