 NM Secretary of State

Notes:
The late entry of former governor (1995-2003) and presidential candidate (2012 and 2016) Gary Johnson as the Libertarian nominee stirred up this race, but Sen. Martin Heinrich (D) still went on to win a second term by a comfortable margin.  Heinrich had been facing Mick Rich (R), president of Mick Rich Contractors of Albuquerque, and State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn (L).  On July 30 Dunn announced he was ending his campaign, and Johnson took his place, formally announcing his candidacy on Aug. 14.  Rich, a first-time candidate, won the June 5 primary uncontested, but his campaign manager left in August.

Johnson was one of very few candidates around the country to make the federal deficit and debt a priority, saying, "It's the biggest issue facing this country."

The three candidates met for two debates in Albuquerque, on Oct. 12 on KOAT-TV 7 (>) and Oct. 26 on KRQE-TV 13 (>).

According to Open Secrets, the Heinrich campaign raised $8.6 million, spent $8 million, and finished with cash on hand of $654,974; the Rich campaign raised and spent about $960,000, of which 32.5% was from candidate self-financing; and the Johnson campaign raised and spent about $395,000 (>).
