A New Governing Approach for Maryland

Maryland is a great state, but for decades we haven't made progress on key issue–such as low student achievement, stagnant wages, and poverty.

Our administration will chart a very different path–expanding bold solutions that don't just sound good, but are tested and proven to work. As examples:

EDUCATION
We'II raise an army of tutors, including retirees and recent college grads, to help every struggling 1st and 2nd grader in the state–moving them up toward grade level early, before their problems get serious in later grades, and reversing COVID-related learning loss.
 
JOBS
We'II partner with Maryland businesses to provide proven job training programs to every adult who wants to advance. lf done right, job training can increase earnings as much as 40%. The key is to focus the training on fast-growing industries with well-paying jobs, and to work hand-in-hand with employers who provide the trainees with paid internships.

PUBLIC SAFETY
We'II fund crime-fighting strategies that produce big reductions in violent crime while building community trust–such as Focused Deterrence (targeted at repeat violent offenders, helped reduce homicides in Oakland CA by 50%) and Community Policing in "hot-spots" where half of all urban crime occurs (found to cut crime as much as 25%).
