The Sacramento Press Club is hosting a debate among leading candidates running in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election.

The debate will take place at Sacramento's Guild Theater (2828 35th Street) on Tuesday, August 17, at 6 p.m., in front of a live audience. This one-hour event will be co-sponsored by The Sacramento Bee and CapRadio, and will broadcast on CapRadio and NPR member stations across California beginning Wednesday morning.

“At a pivotal moment for California, this debate will let voters get to know where the candidates stand on some of the most pressing issues in the state,” said Alexei Koseff, president of the Sacramento Press Club. “We hope this will help Californians decide how to vote on the recall.”

Top candidates vying on the recall ballot’s second question were invited to attend. Candidates John Cox, Kevin Faulconer, Kevin Kiley and Doug Ose have agreed to participate in the debate. Gov. Gavin Newsom, the target of the recall election, and challenger Larry Elder declined.

The debate will be hosted by CapRadio’s Vicki Gonzalez, along with fellow moderators Lara Korte and Sophia Bollag of The Sacramento Bee. Bollag is a Sacramento Press Club board member.

“The Bee is committed to helping voters navigate an unusual election that will decide the future direction of our state,” said Colleen McCain Nelson, executive editor of The Sacramento Bee. “This debate will illuminate key policy differences among several candidates, and we're pleased to participate as a sponsor.”

This is a ticketed event. The audience at the Guild Theater will consist of members of the Sacramento Press Club, journalists, candidate supporters and invited campaign guests. All attendees will need to demonstrate proof of vaccination and will be required to wear face coverings or masks during the debate. Proceeds will go to the Sacramento Press Club’s scholarship fund for aspiring and student journalists.

Journalists hoping to cover the debate can request credentials here. There will be an opportunity to speak with the candidates immediately following the debate.
