DGA Statement On Gov. John Bel Edwards’ Re-Election

DGA Chair Gov. Gina Raimondo issued the following statement on Gov. John Bel Edwards’ re-election in Louisiana:

“Congratulations to Gov. Edwards on his historic victory tonight. Gov. Edwards made incredible progress for the people of Louisiana—turning a $2 billion deficit into a surplus, providing health care to 450,000 working Louisianans, and giving teachers their first pay raise in a decade. Gov. Edwards has been an education governor, investing in public education and higher education for the first time in a decade.

Just like Gov.-Elect Andy Beshear’s victory in Kentucky, Gov. Edwards’ win proves that strong Democrats can be competitive anywhere in the country—in red, blue, and purple states. Louisiana voters rewarded Gov. Edwards with four more years because of his bipartisan record of success and I look forward to seeing the progress he will make for Louisiana in his second term.”

DGA Executive Director Noam Lee released the following statement:

“This race was a top priority for the DGA this year. We worked directly with Gov. Edwards’ campaign to ensure they had the organization needed to win from day one. The DGA strategically made over a $9 million investment in Louisiana, which happened because of our record fundraising this year.

The DGA is proud to help Gov. Edwards make history tonight as the first Democratic governor in Louisiana to win re-election in 44 years. Gov. Edwards’ win was no fluke four years ago and it is no accident tonight. We congratulate Gov. Edwards on his re-election.”

With One Day Before The Runoff, Republican Sirens Abound In Louisiana

With one day before the runoff, all signs point to Republicans panicking in Louisiana. Republicans are worried about the suburbs, Abraham supporters, and Democratic turnout in early voting.

Despite Trump winning the state by 20 points in 2016, the RNC dumped $2 million into Louisiana to try and bail out Eddie Rispone. Trump has visited the state a total of three times this fall and is “much needed help” for Rispone. Yet Trump’s last visit during early voting only had a “minimal” effect.

Republicans are criticizing Rispone for neglecting the suburbs, saying his neglect is responsible for Gov. Edwards’ overperformance in Jefferson Parish, a parish bordering New Orleans, in the primary.

Rispone’s negative ads against Abraham backfired. Abraham’s son-in-law donated $5,000 to Gov. Edwards and a member of Abraham’s finance committee even endorsed Gov. Edwards. The Hayride, a conservative Louisiana blog, said Rispone’s inability to lock down Abraham voters has been “disappointing.”

Republicans are terrified of the early voting numbers that clearly show Democrats are energized. In early voting, African-American turnout made up 31 percent of the electorate, up 6 percent compared to the primary. Overall Democratic turnout was up 2 percent from the primary.

“Republicans are hitting the panic button about Phony Eddie Rispone,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner. “The RNC’s last-minute spending won’t erase Rispone’s support of Bobby Jindal’s failed policies and his attacks on Gov. Edwards’ military service.”

Louisiana Republican And Former Sheriff Normand: Rispone’s Attempt To Minimize Edwards’ Military Service “Infuriates Me”

WWL Radio Host Newell Normand, a former Republican sheriff, panned Eddie Rispone’s attack on Gov. Edwards’ military service and his later excuse for it.

Rispone has been in hot water for saying Gov. Edwards “hurt the reputation of West Point.”

Normand says, “Here is a guy [Edwards] that served as an Army Ranger in the active service for eight years, returns home, goes to church, raises a family, further educated himself, practices as a country lawyer, participates in government, and ultimately becomes the governor, and he’s hurt the reputation of West Point?” To Normand, it doesn’t “make sense at all.”

Days later, Rispone was asked to back up his statement going after Gov. Edwards’ military service. Rispone said, “I was only repeating what I had heard from other people.” Normand didn’t buy that excuse.

“Republicans know Eddie Rispone’s attack on Gov. Edwards’ military service is beyond the pale,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner.

Listen to the segment or view the transcript below:

WWL Radio: Normand: We’ve got to be better than to smear veterans from opposing parties

Folks you know as we approach Veterans day there are things that go on and the way that folks treat military service for there own purposes that completely mystifies me all the time. And you know, as we approach Veterans Day, which is this Monday, I always reflect about the heroes of our country, who have served in the military or who are presently serving, and for the obvious reasons, and I have said this before, I have always felt a little less I guess and slighted for not having served. You know they didn’t even have to register for the draft when I turned 18.  So, when folks attempt, and they make these silly attempts to minimize the service, the duty, the loyalty, and in many cases the sacrifice, just absolutely infuriates me. And what infuriates me even more is when its done for political expediency or gain. You know recently on the view, Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar, neither of whom I have much respect for, attempted to propagate a theory put forth by Hillary Clinton that Tulsi Gabbard, who is presently serving in the military and she’s running in the Democratic primary, and they where trying to say that she is a favorite of the Russians and is being groomed by the Republicans for a third party run. Hostin and Behar both, you know they really just kind of threw caution to the wind and motivated, I guess by their disdain for Trump and their love for Hillary Clinton, and decided to embrace Clinton’s comments on this. I don’t know. I mean I guess I can understand that if Hillary is their candidate of choice or better yet their hero,  but what I don’t understand is why would they choose to attack a presently serving member of the military, who has spent two tours in the middle east, blinded by whatever affection, love or whatever they have for Clinton or their hate for Trump. Joy Behar went on and referred to Tulsi Gabbard as a useful idiot to the Russians. Now I have to give kudos to Gabbard. Gabbard requested to go on the show and challenge Behar and said the following. She said, “I’m going to set the record straight. I am a patriot. I love our country. I am a strong intelligent women of color, and I have dedicated almost my entire life protecting the safety, security, and the freedom of all Americans in this country. It’s offensive to say that I am a witting or unwitting asset of a foreign country. This is a country I am willing to lay my life down for, and if you are saying it’s not deliberate. Then you are implying that I am too stupid and naïve and lack the intelligence to know what I am doing.” And all I can say about that statement is BAM! [5:00] And it sounds like  Joy is being used by Hillary Clinton. You know Joy is just repeating what Hillary has told her. Now interestingly enough it doesn’t really matter if you are on the left or the right on whether or not you’re going to engage in this kind of conduct. Just right here, closer to home, this gubernatorial challenger to Governor John Bel Edwards, Eddie Rispone was asked by a reporter about Governor Edwards experience at the US military academy at West Point.  Should have been a softball right? I mean do you have to dig real deep to say that you have the respect for everyone who has served even if it may be a competitor to you or a political opponent, or otherwise. Softball. How wrong we were, are. Cause Eddie Rispone’s response didn’t make any sense at all. He says, “Yeah, you know I’m disappointed in that, if I had to be candid.” Well please do Eddie because it might be the first time you are in this campaign. Cause I think we’ve been waiting. He goes on to say, “I think he’s hurt the reputation of West Point.’ What? Never mind, maybe we really don’t want you to be candid Eddie. Cause it doesn’t sound like this is going to be an intellectual stream of consciousness that’s going to come out of your mouth. I mean here is a guy that served as an Army ranger in the active service for eight years, returns home, goes to church, raises a family, further educated himself, practices as a country lawyer, participates in government, and ultimately becomes the governor, and he’s hurt the reputation of West Point? So what was Rispone’s case and point? I don’t think West Point wants to turn out a bunch of trial lawyers that will say or do anything to stay in power. Hm, okay. That’s it? Days later he was asked by another reporter, If attacking a West Point graduate was a good move. Once again, candid response, Eddie Rispone says, “I was only repeating what I had heard from other people.” You know what’s really scary, he’s sounding a lot like Joy Behar. And If that doesn’t keep you up at nights, I don’t know what will. We’ll be right back.”

ROUNDUP: Trump Rally Had “Minimal” Effect On Early Voting, Strong Early Voting Numbers Good Sign For Louisiana Gov. Edwards In Runoff

The early voting numbers put Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards in a good position to win on Saturday.

Early voting was up 30 percent compared to the primary and African-American turnout as a total percentage of the electorate increased 6 percentage points. Overall Democratic turnout increased by 6 points compared to the primary.

President Trump held a rally in Monroe last week to boost turnout in the early voting period last week—yet it had a “minimal” effect. State Rep. Ted James, an African-American Democrat from Baton Rouge, says Rispone aligning himself closely with Trump may be juicing African-American turnout and helping Gov. Edwards.

DGA Launches New Video, Website: RisponeDisrespectsVets.com

Today, on Veterans’ Day, the Democratic Governors Association is launching a new website: RisponeDisrespectsVets.com. The new website highlights Eddie Rispone’s comments attacking Gov. Edwards’ military service and the veterans community’s response.

In a radio interview, Rispone was asked about Edwards’ military record and  responded, “Yeah, you know I’m disappointed in that, if I have to be candid. I think he’s hurt the reputation of West Point.”

Eddie Rispone doubled down on this perplexing strategy, and refuses to issue an apology to veterans.

“Eddie Rispone insulted not only Gov. Edwards’ military record but all veterans with his disgusting comments,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner. “This website allows voters to learn about Rispone’s reprehensible comments and the tools to call on Rispone to apologize. Veterans Day marks the perfect opportunity for Rispone to apologize but Rispone’s comments show he doesn’t have the character to serve as governor.”

This Is The Only Story That Matters The Next Two Weeks In The Louisiana Governor’s Race

“Rispone Calls Edwards A Disappointment To West Point, US Military” – WWL Radio

While David Vitter did many things to disgrace Louisiana, he never stooped so low as to attack John Bel Edwards’s military service in 2015.

Today, while on conservative talk radio, his opponent, political insider Eddie Rispone, said Gov. Edwards “hurt the reputation of West Point.”

In response, the Governor hit back, saying, “Mr. Rispone went to college to not go in the Army. I went to the Army in order to go to college. That’s the difference.”

Edwards went on to say, “When Eddie Rispone was sitting on the board of (the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry) getting special favors from state government, I was still jumping out of airplanes at 2 o’clock in the morning.”

Eddie Rispone seems to be dedicated to this perplexing strategy, doubling down on his comments in a statement later in the day.

“Eddie Rispone’s business record already raises troubling questions about his character, but today’s comments, and his defense of them, show a man who lacks any principles whatsoever,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner. “Rispone did not just denigrate Gov. Edwards’ service, he insulted veterans across Louisiana. His comments have no place in politics and today’s comments make clear that Eddie Rispone is unfit to serve as governor.”

DGA Launches New Website: WhereIsEddieRispone.com

Today the Democratic Governors Association is launching a new website: WhereIsEddieRispone.com. The new website highlights the many times Eddie Rispone has ducked Louisiana voters since the gubernatorial primary.

He hasn’t been seen on the campaign trail and no one can seem to say what he’s been up to. The website asks one simple question: “Where in the world is Eddie Rispone?”

Is Rispone hiding from voters because his Medicaid plan could take away coverage from 300,000 Louisianans? Or could he be dodging voters because he supports the same Jindal policies that would lead to drastic cuts to education and health care? Or is he just too chicken to face the voters now that he can’t hide behind former gubernatorial candidate Ralph Abraham?

“Rispone can try to hide, but it won’t change the fact that his plans will take Louisiana back to failed Jindal era,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner. “Louisiana voters deserve to know where in the world Eddie Rispone is and why he wants to take away health care from 300,000 Louisianans.”

RGA Releases New Digital Ad In Louisiana’s Governor Race On John Bel Edwards’ Role In Releasing Violent Offenders

WASHINGTON, D.C. – RGA Right Direction PAC, an organization supported by the Republican Governors Association (RGA), today released a new digital ad campaign exposing Governor John Bel Edwards false claim that “not one” violent criminal has been released on his watch.

NOT ONE

The digital ad, titled “Not One,” breaks down Edwards’ disingenuous statement, made repeatedly in the recent Louisiana Public Broadcasting debate, that no violent offenders have been freed under his administration. The facts paint a different picture: in 2016 Edwards commuted the prison sentences of 15 convicted murderers, making these individuals with violent criminal backgrounds eligible for early release.

David Martin Bacon who was serving a life sentence for killing an innocent husband and father in cold blood, was one of these individuals. Bacon was released shortly after Edwards commuted his sentence. The victim’s wife and daughter, who the Edwards administration failed to notify of his early release, have expressed shock and outrage in letters to the governor.

The victim’s daughter filed suit against the Edwards administration in October for withholding information from the family, who had filed public records requests in their search for answers. The family’s attorney told the St. Charles Herald Guide: “They don’t know why this man was pardoned…The family is looking for answers as to why the governor put a murderer back on the streets.”

“John Bel Edwards has made it clear he cares more about scoring political points than keeping Louisianans safe,” said RGA Communications Director Amelia Chassé Alcivar. “Misleading Louisiana voters about his record while a grieving family is still searching for answers is one more way John Bel Edwards puts politics over people.”

Script for “Not One”:

Gov. Edwards: “There was not anybody serving a sentence for a violent offense who was let out early. Not one.”

Not one? John Bel Edwards isn’t telling you the whole story.

His first year in office, Edwards commuted the sentences of 15 convicted murderers.

One was serving a life sentence for killing an innocent husband and father in cold blood.

Now he’s back out on the street – and the victim’s family is outraged.

When the family tried to get answers, John Bel Edwards’ office withheld information. They’re still waiting.

Gov. Edwards: “Not one.”

John Bel Edwards puts criminals over grieving families.

Put Louisiana’s safety first. Vote John Bel Edwards out.

RGA Releases New TV Ad Exposing John Bel Edwards’ “Clueless” Flood Recovery

WASHINGTON, D.C. – RGA Right Direction PAC, an organization supported by the Republican Governors Association (RGA), today released its fourth television ad in the Louisiana runoff election. Titled “Clueless,” the ad exposes John Bel Edwards’ sheer incompetence and lack of leadership when Louisiana was faced with an historic natural disaster.

CLUELESS

In 2016, when 6.9 trillion gallons of rain led to historic flooding across part of the state, Edwards was caught flat-footed and off guard, and his handling of the crisis only got worse in the months and years ahead. Instead of providing leadership, Edwards admitted to a Congressional committee that he had no idea how many Louisianans were displaced by the floods.

Moving from apparent indifference to outright incompetence, Edwards’ administration awarded the billion-dollar recovery contract to a firm that has donated over $50,000 to Edwards’ campaigns. Rather than getting the job done, and providing recovery assistance to residents most impacted by the flood, Edwards’ campaign donors have failed.

After the state threw out the first contract and started a new bidding process, the Edwards administration awarded the contract to the same firm a second time. Since the contract has been in place, thousands of Louisianans are still waiting to receive recovery funds. Of the more than $1 billion in federal funds allocated for rebuilding efforts, less than half has been distributed.

“It’s been three years since thousands of homes and businesses were left underwater and Louisianans are still looking for leadership from their governor,” said RGA Communications Director Amelia Chassé Alcivar. “Real people are still suffering thanks to the cluelessness and incompetence of Governor Edwards and his campaign donors – it’s time for new leadership in Louisiana.”

Script for “Clueless”:

Historic floods.

Governor Edwards caught flat-footed.

John Bel Edwards: “I don’t have a guess.”

Rep. Jason Chaffetz: “You don’t even have a guess as to how many people are displaced?”

Edwards: “I do not.”

Chaffetz: “You’re that clueless?”

It gets worse.

He gave the billion-dollar flood recovery contract to a top campaign donor.

They failed.

But Edwards still protected them.

Thousands still waiting.

Millions unspent.

Chaffetz: “You know how bad that looks, right?”

John Bel Edwards: A clueless governor.

RGA Releases New Ad in Louisiana Governor’s Race, “With Her”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – RGA Right Direction PAC, an organization supported by the Republican Governors Association (RGA), today released its third television ad in the Louisiana runoff election. Titled “With Her,” the ad highlights John Bel Edwards’ support for Hillary Clinton and her far-left policies.

WITH HER

In deep red Louisiana, John Bel Edwards cannot run from his record as a tax-and-spend liberal whose policies have stifled job creation and economic growth. And, despite repeated attempts to duck questions, he cannot erase his well-documented support for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and his even more recent ties to the radical anti-Trump “resistance.”

Edwards has boasted about voting for Hillary Clinton, while disparaging President Trump. He played a key role in her nomination, casting his vote for her as a superdelegate to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Even after she insulted hundreds of thousands of Louisiana Trump supporters as “deplorables,” Edwards’ support for Clinton never wavered.

Despite Clinton’s 20-point loss in Louisiana, Edwards continued to emulate her policies as governor. Like Clinton, Edwards supports taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants and opposes the president’s full border security plan.

“Try as he might to make them forget, Louisianans remember that when Hillary Clinton called them ‘deplorables,’ John Bel Edwards was still with her,” said RGA Communications Director Amelia Chassé Alcivar. “Louisianans already rejected Hillary Clinton’s liberal agenda, and they’ll do the same on November 16th when they fire John Bel Edwards.”

Script for “With Her”:

Liberal John Bel Edwards.

John Bel Edwards: “I voted for Secretary Clinton.”

Hillary Clinton: “You can put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call a basket of deplorables.”

Like Hillary, Edwards supports radical policies.

Edwards supports illegal immigrants getting taxpayer-funded benefits and opposed President Trump’s full immigration plan to secure our borders.

John Bel Edwards, too liberal for Louisiana.

President Trump: “Vote John Bel Edwards out.”

RGA Releases Video Highlighting Trump-Pence Support For Eddie Rispone Ahead of Louisiana Debate

The Republican Governors Association (RGA), today released a new video ahead of the gubernatorial debate in the Louisiana governor’s race. The digital spot highlights Vice President Mike Pence’s recent visit to Baton Rouge and the Trump administration’s strong support for Eddie Rispone.

Campaigning with Rispone on Monday, the Vice President delivered the message that the Trump administration is fully committed to defeating tax-and-spend liberal John Bel Edwards and electing Eddie Rispone as the next governor of Louisiana.

Since his strong showing in the primary election, momentum has been on Rispone’s side. While Edwards is limping into the runoff, Republicans across the state have coalesced and solidified their support behind Eddie Rispone’s pro-growth, pro-jobs agenda. As noted by President Trump, Edwards has hammered Louisianans with tax increases, all while the state has failed to take advantage of a booming national economy.

“As we enter the final weeks of the runoff, Republicans are unified in an all-hands-on-deck effort to ensure Eddie Rispone is the next governor of Louisiana. Said RGA Communications Director Amelia Chassé Alcivar. “President Trump and Vice President Pence are committed to ensuring that liberal John Bel Edwards remains a one term governor, and electing proven job creator Eddie Rispone to right the ship and put Louisiana’s economy back on track.”

RGA Releases New TV Ad In Louisiana Runoff

WASHINGTON, D.C. – RGA Right Direction PAC, an organization supported by the Republican Governors Association (RGA), today released its second television ad in the Louisiana runoff election. Titled “Really Angry,” the ad exposes John Bel Edwards’ record of siding with liberal special interests on illegal immigration over Louisiana voters and President Trump.

REALLY ANGRY

The spot includes footage of President Trump at his rally on the eve of the primary election where he expressed his anger that, under Governor Edwards, Louisianans are taking a backseat to illegal immigrants. Edwards’ campaign is being propped up by left-wing activists and organizations that support open borders and amnesty. He has previously stated that under his administration, the state would “support all of the people here” with taxpayer-funded benefits, whether they are in the state legally or illegally. He opposed efforts to ban funding for sanctuary cities, and does not stand fully with the president on securing our borders.

“From opposing efforts to ban sanctuary cities to giving taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal immigrants, John Bel Edwards has made it clear that he is too extreme for Louisiana,” said RGA Communications Director Amelia Chassé Alcivar. ”Louisianans stand with President Trump in support of strong border security, not with John Bel Edwards and the radical activists that are propping up his campaign.”

Script for “Really Angry”

President Trump: “I’m really angry at John Bel Edwards…taking money from open borders extremists”

Taking money from open borders extremists.

Free taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal immigrants.

Edwards even opposed efforts to ban funding for sanctuary cities.

And Edwards opposed President Trump’s full immigration plan to secure our borders.

President Trump: “John Bel Edwards lied to the people of Louisiana. You’ve got to vote John Bel Edwards out.”

RGA Releases New Ad In Louisiana Governor’s Race Featuring President Trump

WASHINGTON, D.C. – RGA Right Direction PAC, an organization supported by the Republican Governors Association (RGA), today released its first television ad in the Louisiana runoff election. Titled “Can’t Take,” the ad features President Donald Trump excoriating Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards for his broken promises, tax-and-spend agenda, and liberal record.

CAN’T TAKE

President Trump knows that Louisiana cannot afford four more years of John Bel Edwards’ tax hikes, poor economic performance, and ties to the most radical liberals in the country.

Fortunately, Louisianans are offered a clear contrast with conservative outsider Eddie Rispone, who puts Louisiana values first and – as a proven job creator – will partner with President Trump to get the state’s economy roaring.

After decisively falling short in the primary with just 46.6 percent of the vote, compared to 52 percent for the Republicans, John Bel Edwards enters the runoff with no clear path to victory and new public polling shows that Rispone has quickly consolidated the Republican vote. Read RGA Executive Director Dave Rexrode’s memo on the runoff election here.

“A clear majority of Louisiana voters rejected John Bel Edwards’ liberal tax-and-spend agenda in the primary, and will do the same in the runoff election,” said RGA Communications Director Amelia Chassé Alcivar. “The voters know what President Trump knows – that John Bel Edwards has failed the state, and Eddie Rispone will right the ship and partner with the President to move Louisiana forward.”

Script for “Can’t Take”

President Trump: “John Bel Edwards lied to the people of Louisiana.

“When John Bel Edwards ran for office, he made your state a sacred promise that he would not raise your taxes.

“Then he got elected and broke that promise by ramming through the largest tax hike in your state’s history, John Bel Edwards.

“Louisiana cannot take four more years of a liberal Democrat governor.”

What They Are Saying: John Bel Edwards Limps Into Runoff As “A Majority Of Louisiana Voters Rejected Him”; “It’s Going To Take A Miracle” To Be Reelected

Edwards Believed That “He Was On Solid Footing To Win It All In The Primary,” He Was Wrong

Dan Fagan, The Advocate: “Despite Edwards enjoying mostly favorable media coverage and having a ton of cash, a majority of Louisiana voters rejected him. Rispone and Abraham received a total of 51%, with Edwards getting only 46.6%.” (Dan Fagan, “Forget The Polls, John Bel Edwards An Underdog In Louisiana Governor’s Race,” The Advocate, 10/15/19)

Edwards Predicted That He Would Win The Election Outright By Receiving At Least 50% Of The Vote In The Jungle Primary.“Edwards and many of his biggest supporters thought he would win re-election Saturday night by taking at least 50% of the vote.” (Tyler Bridges and Will Sentell, “Eddie Rispone Won A Spot In The Runoff Against Gov. John Bel Edwards; Trump May Be The Reason Why,” The Advocate, 10/13/19)

  • Sam Hanna Jr.: The Edwards Campaign Stated That He Was “Polling At No Less Than 51 Percent,” They Were Wrong. “In the weeks leading up to the primary election, it appeared Edwards was on solid footing to win it all in the primary, or at least that’s what Edwards’ allies were saying based on their own polling as well as polling conducted for so-called independent businessmen and the media. They were all wrong. Big-time. Or perhaps they all colluded to intimidate voters into voting for Edwards by continuously leaking to hanger-ons and gossipers and such that Edwards was polling at no less than 51 percent heading into the Oct. 12 election. In the final three days prior to the primary, Edwards was safely sitting on 52 percent, according to ‘sources’ who said that’s what Edwards’ own pollster was saying.” (Sam Hanna Jr., “Is 46 The New 52?,” The Ouachita Citizen, 10/16/17)

Stephanie Grace, The Advocate: Edwards “Already Told” His Story To Voters And It “Wasn’t Enough.” “The bad news is that Edwards already told that story, and it wasn’t enough to get him to the magic number he needed to prevent a runoff. To win outright in Saturday’s primary, he needed a majority of the people who showed up to cast their ballots for him. Instead, a majority chose another candidate.” (Stephanie Grace, “John Bel Edwards Has A Good Story; Problem Is That He Already Told It,” The Advocate, 10/15/19)

Edwards’ Campaign Turnout Efforts “Sucked”

Clancy DuBos, Gambit: “Edwards’ turnout effort sucked.” (Clancy DuBos, “The Louisiana Governor’s Race – Looking Back, And Looking Ahead,” Gambit, 10/15/19)

  • Edwards Cannot Win, Unless He “Seriously Boost[s]” Turnout. “Bottom Line: Donald Trump wasn’t president in 2015, and David Vitter isn’t Edwards’ opponent in 2019. Edwards needs to seriously boost his GOTV efforts in New Orleans and among minority voters, and he needs to get a share of Ralph Abraham’s primary vote.” (Clancy DuBos, “The Louisiana Governor’s Race – Looking Back, And Looking Ahead,” Gambit, 10/15/19)

Ryan Matsumo, Contributing Analyst, Inside Elections: “Edwards’ vote share dropped in 62 of 64 parishes.” (Ryan Matsumoto, Twitter, 10/13/19)

Edwards’ “Baggage Of A “Having An Embarrassing Economic Record,” Means He Will Need A “Miracle” To Win

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “As a result of Saturday’s jungle primary, the Crystal Ball has changed its rating for the Louisiana gubernatorial race to Toss-up from Leans Democratic.” (J. Miles Coleman, “Louisiana Governor: Nationalized Trends Emerge As Runoff Looms,” University Of Virginia Center For Politics, 10/15/19)

Dan Fagan, The Advocate: Given His “Baggage,” “Edwards Now must Be Considered The Underdog. ”In a state that’s last in just about everything, Edwards the incumbent versus Rispone the outsider is not a match-up favoring the governor. With his baggage of having an embarrassing economic record and an unpopular party affiliation, Edwards must now be considered the underdog in the race regardless of what the pollsters say.” (Dan Fagan, “Forget The Polls, John Bel Edwards An Underdog In Louisiana Governor’s Race,” The Advocate, 10/15/19)

Stephanie Grace, The Advocate: It Will Be “Tough” For Edwards To Win.“But don’t let Edwards’ outward confidence, or the early internal polls he’s releasing, fool you; getting to 50% plus one on Nov. 16 is going to be tough. He’s going to have to get creative, because his path going to victory is no longer an obvious one.” (Stephanie Grace, “John Bel Edwards Has A Good Story; Problem Is That He Already Told It,” The Advocate, 10/15/19)

Sam Hanna Jr.: Edwards Will Need A “Miracle” To Be Reelected. “Do you believe in miracles? Gov. John Bel Edwards, a devout Catholic, probably does. He should, since it’s going to take a miracle or something close to it for Edwards to hold off Baton Rouge businessman Eddie Rispone in the Nov. 16 gubernatorial election.” (Sam Hanna Jr., “Is 46 The New 52?,” The Ouachita Citizen, 10/16/17)

Edwards’ Ties With “Extreme” National Democrats “Must Feel Like A Weight Around The Governor’s Neck”

Dan Fagan, The Advocate: Louisianans “Resoundingly Reject The Wackiness” Of Edwards’ Democratic Party. “Edwards’ apologists blame the governor’s disappointing night on increased turnout motivated by Trump’s rally the night before the election. Others bemoan the fact the state has become more ‘partisan.’ If by becoming more partisan you mean they resoundingly reject the wackiness of the increasingly hard-left leaning Democratic Party, then yes, they are more partisan. Edwards’ party is widely unpopular with a majority of Louisiana voters. And as each day passes, it seems to become more so.” (Dan Fagan, “Forget The Polls, John Bel Edwards An Underdog In Louisiana Governor’s Race,” The Advocate, 10/15/19)

  • Edwards Belongs To A Political Party That Is “Now So Extreme.“ “National Democrats are now so extreme, it’s made it close to impossible for many in Louisiana, who typically lean right, to do anything but reject the Dems’ agenda and anyone associated with it. Given the Democrats’ soft embrace of infanticide, flirting with socialism and open borders, and pushing for impeachment without justification, Edwards’ party affiliation must feel like a weight around the governor’s neck, making it seem impossible for him to swim to the top.” (Dan Fagan, “Forget The Polls, John Bel Edwards An Underdog In Louisiana Governor’s Race,” The Advocate, 10/15/19)

Subject:          Louisiana Runoff History

By the end of voting on Saturday, 1.34 million Louisianans cast their ballot in the race for Governor, an increase of more than 20% over 2015.  In doing so, the voters made it clear that they are looking for new leadership and a departure from the failed liberal policies of Governor John Bel Edwards.

A few key facts that are important for those watching the race:

  • Since Louisiana adopted the open primary system in 1975 NO governor has been re-elected in a run-off election, and that trend will continue in 2019.
  • Nearly 52% of all voters cast a ballot for a Republican candidate for governor. Unlike 2015, Republicans are coming out of the primary united and are ready to end the failed administration of John Bel Edwards. Congressman Ralph Abraham immediately endorsed Eddie Rispone last night and the party is working together to win the run-off.  Moreover, Governor Edwards underperformed when compared to his 2015 runoff results, losing vote share in 62 of 64 parishes which is just more evidence that voters are hungry for change.
  • Governor Edwards spent over $8 million on positive television ads touting his “record” and voters weren’t buying what he was trying to sell.  Louisiana’s economy is ranked dead last in the south, thousands of jobs have left the state, and the people recognize that the state is falling further behind.  His allies spent an additional nearly $7 million running attack ads against Eddie Rispone and Ralph Abraham.  Combined, they spent a staggering $15.2 million on media alone in an attempt to get to 50% in yesterday’s primary, as they recognize that no governor has ever won re-election in a run-off election.  For months they promoted “polls” and “internal strategy memos” that showed they would win outright.  They didn’t because a majority of voters recognize that Governor Edwards has failed and want new leadership.
  • Leading race handicapping organizations immediately recognized the perilous position John Bel Edwards finds himself in by failing to avoid a runoff. The Cook Political Report and Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball both moved the race from “Lean Democrat” to “Toss Up” following the primary results.
Over the next five weeks observers should expect to see an increasingly desperate effort from Governor Edwards and his allies as they scramble to overcome the disaster that was the primary election.  They are going to throw the kitchen sink at Eddie Rispone because they know Governor Edwards cannot win on his failed record.
The Republican Governors Association will continue to be heavily engaged in the run-off election and are proud to stand with Eddie Rispone, the next Governor of Louisiana.
