VA Department of Elections

Notes:  Sen. Tim Kaine (D), seeking a second term, was heavily favored over
Prince William County Board chairman Corey Stewart (R).  Also in the race was Matt Waters (L).

Kaine achieved national prominence as Hillary Clinton's running mate in Fall 2016; he was touted as "America's Dad."

Stewart is a controversial figure.  In the June 12 Republican primary he defeated Del. Nick Freitas by 44.87% to 43.14% and 11.99% for E.W. Jackson.  He has said, "I was Trump before Trump was Trump," is a defender of Confederate heritage, claims credit for "implementing the nation’s toughest crackdown on illegal immigration," and served for a time as Virginia chairman of Trump's campaign before being removed in Oct. 2016.  The media ran many reports of Republican leaders and candidates distancing themselves from Stewart.

Kaine and Stewart participated in three debates: on July 21 at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs hosted by the Virginia Bar Association (>); on Sept. 26 at Capital One in Tysons hosted by NBC 4/WRC-TV (>); and on Oct. 2 at WCVE studios in Richmond (>).

The finances of this race were extremely lopsided; according to Open Secrets, the Kaine campaign spent $18.5 million compared to just $2.7 million for the Stewart campaign (>).
