 OH Secretary of State

Notes:
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D), seeking a third term, defeated U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci (R).  Brown is a veteran politician whose career spans more than 40 years.  He was first elected to the Ohio House in 1974, served as Ohio Secretary of State from 1983-91, and in the U.S. House from Jan. 1993 to Jan. 2007.  Renacci was first elected to represent the 16th CD in north-central Ohio in Nov. 2010.

Treasurer Josh Mandel was seen as the likely Republican challenger to Brown.  However, on Jan. 5, 2018 he ended his campaign due to a health issue with his wife.  President Trump persuaded Renacci, who had been running for governor, to switch over to the Senate race; Renacci announced his decision on Jan. 11.  He won the May 8 Republican primary with 47.3% of the vote; the next closest competitor was Cleveland businessman Mike Gibbons, running as a conservative outsider, at 31.7%.

Three debates occurred.  The first, organized by the Ohio Debate Commission, took place on Oct. 14 at the Westfield Insurance Studio Theater at the Idea Center in Playhouse Square in Cleveland (>); a second on Oct. 20 on WCMH-TV in Columbus (>); and the third on Oct. 26 at Miami University (>).

The Brown campaign reported total receipts of $22.7 million and total disbursements of $24.0 million for 2017-18 (>) [$28.7 million for 2013-18] compared to receipts of $8.0 million and $8.2 million for Renacci (>) (more).
