 MS Secretary of State

Notes: Sen. Roger Wicker (R) was elected to a second full term.  Wicker has served in the Senate since Dec. 31, 2007; he was appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour to fill the seat formerly held by Trent Lott, elected to fill out the term in a Nov. 2008 special election, and elected to a full term in 2012.  Prior to the Senate, Wicker served in the U.S. House; he was president of the 1994 freshman class.

State Sen. Chris McDaniel (R) had been preparing to mount a primary challenge to Wicker, but in March he decided he would run for the Cochran seat instead.

On the Democratic side, the June 5 primary produced a close result as Howard Sherman, a venture capitalist and husband of actress Sela Ward (31.9%) finished ahead of House Minority Leader David Baria (31.0%) and state Rep. Omeria Scott (24.1%).  In the June 26 runoff, Baria defeated Sherman by 58.7% to 41.3%.  Also on the November ballot were Danny Bedwell (L) and Shawn O'Hara (Ref.).

Wicker declined to debate.
For his part Baria held a series of twelve candidate forums starting on Sept. 18.
