TERRY HAYES INDEPENDENT FOR GOVERNOR Terry is a lifelong Mainer who has taken on the establishment - in Augusta to put Maine's fiscal house in order and solve problems. Republicans and Democrats have twice elected her to steward the state's finances because she rises above the partisan fray and gets results for Maine's taxpayers. The second of six children, Terry was born in 1958 and grew up in greater Portland. When her mother was hospitalized at AMHI in 1966, Terry and her siblings moved to the St. Louis Children's Home in Scarborough. In 1969, the children returned to their father's care. He died in an accident the next year. Terry credits her extended family and "village" for helping her and her siblings through their formative years. With scholarships and work study, Terry graduated from Bowdoin in 1980. She also earned a MBA from Thomas College in 2014. Terry's career in Maine has included teaching, education administration, advocacy work in custody litigation, service in the Legislature, and four years as State Treasurer. Terry and her husband Steve live in Buckfield and have three adult children and four.granddaughters.
