  FL Department of State

Notes:
Democrats viewed this seat as a possible pick-up.  Sen. Marco Rubio was running for president
(+) and the leading Republican contenders Reps. David Jolly (R-13) and Ron DeSantis (R-6) were seen as beatable.  However on June 22  Rubio reversed course and announced he had decided to seek re-election (+).  Jolly and DeSantis abandoned their bids, and Rubio handily fended off a primary challenge from Carlos Beruff and several others.  In the Democratic primary, Rep. Patrick Murphy dispatched Alan Grayson and several others.  In November Democrats' hopes for a pick-up fell short as Rubio defeated Murphy (D).

The Center for Responsive Politics reports the Florida Senate race was the fourth most expensive of the cycle with a total of $110.5 million spent, including $59.9 million by candidates and $50.6 million by outside groups (>).  According to the Center, the Rubio campaign spent $21.8 million compared to $19.0 million for the Murphy campaign (>).
According to the FEC for 2015-16 the Murphy campaign reported disbursements of $19.5 million compared to total disbursements of $16.9 million for the Rubio campaign (>).
