Notes: Secretary of State Kate Brown ascended to the office of governor on Feb. 16, 2016 following resignation of Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) amid scandal.  She became the first openly LGBTQ person to serve as governor of an American state.  This was a special election to complete Kitzhaber's term, and the seat is up again in 2020. 

The last Republican elected governor of Oregon was Vic Atiyeh in 1982.  Dr. Bud Pierce, a Salem oncologist, won the primary over Allen Alley and went on to face Brown.  The Oregonian reported on Oct. 28 that Pierce spent nearly $2 million of his own money on the campaign.

There were five debates, four with just the major party candidates:
Sept. 24 - The Riverhouse in Bend (>);
Sept. 30 - at the City Club of Portland (>);
Oct. 6 - Oregon Public Broadcasting from Winston Churchill High School in Eugene (>) [Brown, Pierce and Thomason];
Oct. 13 - studios of KOBI-TV/NBC5 in Medford (>);
Oct. 20 - at KGW-TV studios in Portland (>). 

Pierce provoked significant controversy with a remark on domestic violence during the Sept. 30 debate. 

Corporate tax Measure 97 was the major issue in the campaign; Brown supported the measure and Pierce opposed it.
