Notes: Gov. Mike Pence (R)'s decision to join Donald Trump's ticket, announced on July 15, shook up the race.  The  Indiana Republican Party's central committee selected Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) as the party's nominee.  Facing Holcomb was former Speaker of the House John Gregg (D), who was making a second run after a very close race in 2012.  Gregg, a partner at BGD, had launched his campaign in April 2015 and had to reposition after running against Pence for over a year.  Rex Bell (L), who runs a contruction business and is chairman of the Libertarian Party of Wayne County, was the third candidate in the race.  According to the National Institute on Money in State Politics (>), Gregg outraised Holcomb by $17.5 million to $15.8 million. 

Holcomb won by 5.96 percentage points; by comparison in other top of the ticket races, Rep. Todd Young (R) defeated former Sen. Evan Bayh (D) by 52.11% to 42.41% (9.70 percentage points) for U.S. Senate and for president Trump/Pence defeated Clinton/Kaine by 19.17 percentage points.  The 2012 race between Pence and Gregg was closer than 2016, with Pence winning by just 2.96 percentage points.

Mike O’Brien was most recently a senior public policy advisor in Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Indianapolis office and a member of the firm’s Governmental Services and Finance Department. Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Mike was a vice president with Bose Public Affairs Group in Indianapolis. He has also served as legislative director for Governor Mitch Daniels during which he was the primary liaison between the governor and the General Assembly on all legislative matters.  Mike’s previous political experience includes working on the Mitch for Governor Campaign in 2004 and 2008. In 2006, he managed Todd Rokita’s successful election as Secretary of State. In 2009, he was elected chairman of the Hendricks County Republican Party.
