Mary also cosponsored the Vow To Hire Heroes Act that gives businesses tax credits for hiring wounded and unemployed veterans. PROTECTING OUR VETERANS Mary helped green-light two new VA Clinics in Lafayette and Lake Charles that were being held up by federal red tape and has successfully passed bipartisan legislation to hold VA executives accountable for any delays in the care of wounded warriors. WORKING TO MAKE COLLEGE MORE AFFORDABLE Mary has secured and saved billions for Louisiana schools, including nearly $800 million for Historically Black Colleges & Universities for educational programs and facilities. She's also fought to increase the maximum Pell Grant amount and reduce interest rates on student loans. ADDRESSING THE PAST, STRENGTHENING OUR FUTURE Mary has worked to address injustices faced by African Americans throughout our history by securing more than $1 billion for African-American farmers who were denied compensation, seeking an apology from Congress for failing to act on civil rights-era lynching, and calling for broader legislation to address racial discrimination and intimidation. FIGHTING FOR LOUISIANA Mary's fighting to protect Social Security and Medicare by opposing raising the retirement age and privatizing the programs; defending the jobs of more than 10,000 troops by working to save Fort Polk; and ensuring no person is denied the right to vote on account of race or color.
