This was an open seat.  Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who was elected in 2010 as an independent but switched to the Democratic party in May 2013, announced on Sept. 4, 2013 that he would not seek re-election (>).

On the Democratic side
(>), Providence Mayor Angel Taveras announced his candidacy on Oct. 28, Treasurer Gina Raimondo entered the race on Dec. 18, and Clay Pell launched his campaign on Jan. 28, 2014.  Pell was best known as the grandson of the late long-serving U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell and the husband of Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan.  In the Sept. 9 primary, Raimondo finished first with 53,990 votes (42.2%), followed by Taveras 37,326 (29.1%), Pell 34,515 (26.9%) and Todd Giroux 2,264 (1.8%).

Cranston May Allan Fung won the Republican primary by 17,530 votes (54.9%) to 14,399 (45.1%)  for Ken Block,  Block, a businessman and software developer, founded the Moderate Party of Rhode Island in 2009 and was its nominee for governor in 2010.

Also running was Robert J. Healey, a businessman, perennial candidate, and founder in 1994 of the Cool Moose Party, running as the nominee of the Moderate Party.  Two independents rounded out the field.

The three top candidates debated at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Oct. 21, broadcast on WPRI-TV in cooperation with the Providence Journal (>).

According to the National Institue on Money in Politics, the Raimondo campaign received contributions of $6.3 million compared to to $1.6 million for the Fung campaign (>).
