Rhode Island Has a Jobs Crisis
Gina Raimondo's "Rhode Map" to Recovery

Manufacturing:

Making Things in RI Again

Rhode Island was a manufacturing powerhouse, and every Rhode Islander has a story to tell: Gina's father worked at the Bulova Watch factory.

Manufacturing is coming back to America, and RI deserves a fair shot at those jobs. Unlike in the past, these high-skilled manufacturing jobs will be innovative, based on advanced science and technology.

By investing in new manufacturing, we'll bring quality jobs back to Rhode Island. Gina will make Rhode Island a cradle of innovation and expand workforce development so our workers learn the skills they need to fill new jobs.

How we do it:

1.    Establish the Rhode Island Innovation Institute: RI II, where our local colleges
and universities will pair up with businesses to create innovative products and ways to manufacture them.

2.    Advanced manufacturing jobs require advanced training. We'll make CCRI
the engine of workforce development and match curriculums with the skills workers need.

3.    To support manufacturers, we'll create a "Manufacturers' Toolkit" to help businesses grow, pair them with resources around the state and increase exports to new markets.

Infrastructure:
Fixing Our Roads

How much did you pay in car repairs from potholes and bad roads last year? The average Rhode Islander spent $467.
1

But potholes are just a symptom of the problem. Because we haven't maintained our infrastructure, we have some of the worst roads and bridges in the entire country, which makes it harder to move our products.

If we fix our roads and bridges and retrofit our schools and buildings with green technologies, we can put Rhode Islanders back to work2 and make our state a more inviting place to start or move a business.

How we do it:

1.    Give cities and towns access to low-interest loans for upgrades to their infrastructure and fund ongoing maintenance so that local roads never again become as deteriorated as they are now.

2.    Create a Green Bank to help towns, businesses and homeowners retrofit buildings with energy-efficient technology and create a School Building Authority to pay for construction and improvements in local schools.

3.    Bring all of our local communities together to use new technologies and apply the best-possible infrastructure solutions. When one city or town benefits, we all benefit.

Gina's "Rhode Map" to Economic Recovery
"Let's Get Rhode Island Working Again."
             -Gina

MANUFACTURING
A single new manufacturing job creates another 1.6 local service jobs, and every dollar in manufacturing sales adds another $1.48 to the local economy.
3

RETROFITTING
Bill Clinton said the kind of energy-efficient retrofitting programs Gina wants to employ "puts people to work. It creates jobs. It's the kind of thing that we ought to be doing."
4

TOURISM
Tourism is an incredibly powerful economic force. Every person who visits our state spends $481 in our local businesses, generating billions in wages and salaries for Rhode Island employees.
5

SMALL BUSINESS
Small Business represents over 95% of all employers in Rhode Island. They need less unnecessary regulatory burdens and more help to promote their business.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
By promoting science and technology in grade schools, teaching jobs skills in colleges and pairing businesses with universities, we can have one of the best trained workforces in America.

MARINE TECHNOLOGY
The Ocean State's maritime trades generate over $2.2 billion in sales for local businesses. To grow this industry, we must repair our marinas and ports to make them world-class and ready to handle expansion.

FOOD SCIENCE
Investing in locally grown food is an investment in our local economy. It benefits our small farms, food manufacturers, wineries, distilleries and breweries.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Seventy percent of our schools were built between 25 and 75 years ago. They need repairs, just like our roads and bridges. Every $10 million of spending on these projects supports approximately 150 jobs.

Rhode Island Needs Jobs
Gina Has a Plan

To turn things around, urgent change must be made.

Gina fixed the pension crisis to protect important social services and save families from tax increases so that more communities didn't end up bankrupt like Central Falls.

Gina has a bold plan to get us on the road to recovery and put 20,000 people back to work.

Bringing People Together to Solve Big Problems

GINA for Governor
"We've got to act now to bring back good, innovative jobs, reinvest in education and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. I promise courageous, bold action because our families deserve better."
–Gina

An Economy Built to Last: To spark our economy, we need to make things in Rhode Island again. Gina will rebuild manufacturing by creating RI II, an Innovation Institute that brings higher education and local business together to create new ideas, new products and new jobs.

A Life-Changing Education: Education should be a lifelong experience. Gina will bring our outdated schools into the 21st century and work with K-12 teachers to improve student performance. To make college more affordable, Gina will improve and expand Rl's scholarship fund. And to keep our young people here at home, she will create a student loan forgiveness program for graduates who stay in Rhode Island to work or start a business.

A Modern Infrastructure: To recruit first-class jobs and businesses, we need first-class infrastructure. Gina will make Rhode Island the first state with a road and bridge funding formula to keep our roads and bridges well maintained, never letting them deteriorate to their current state.

Gina's Progressive Priorities

Guns:
Ban the sale and purchase of military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Jobs:
Raise the minimum wage and index it with regular cost-of-living adjustments.

Women: Ensure equal pay for equal work for all Rhode Islanders.

Accountability: Hold Wall Street to the same ethical standards as everyone else.

Democrat Gina Raimondo for
Rhode Island
Gina grew up in Smithfield in a tight-knit Italian-American family, with three generations living under one roof. As a girl, her father lost his job along with hundreds of others when the factory where he worked for 28 years moved overseas. Like many of us, they struggled, but it shaped her core beliefs in hard work, opportunity and the importance of financial security.

Earning degrees in law and economics, Gina started a business in Rhode Island to help innovative companies get started and created over a thousand jobs. As Rhode Island's Treasurer, she took on our $7 billion pension shortfall and saved cities and towns from potential bankruptcy.

Gina and Andy are parents of two young kids, Ceci and Tommy, who attend Providence public schools.
