Notes: Gov. Terry Branstad (R) defeated state Sen. Jack Hatch (D) and three other candidates to win a sixth term as governor. The Branstad campaign significantly outspent Hatch en route to a 21.72- percentage point margin. After serving in the State House and as lieutenant governor, Branstad was first elected governor at age 36 in 1982, defeating Roxanne Conlin; he was re-elected in 1986, 1990 and 1994. Following his third term he retired and served as president of Des Moines University before returning to politics to defeat Gov. Chet Culver in 2010. Hatch was first elected to the State Senate in 2002, representing the 33rd District covering much of Des Moines; he previously served in the State House. Earlier he served as state director for Sen. Tom Harkin. In 2002 he founded Hatch Development Group, which focuses on mixed income, affordable housing communities. State Rep. Tyler Olsen and former state Rep. Bob Krause also ran but dropped out well before the June 3 primary, leaving Hatch unopposed. Hatch announced Cedar Rapids city councilwoman Monica Vernon as his running mate on June 17. Branstad and Hatch debated three times: at the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 14 hosted by Iowa Public Television's Iowa Press (>); in Burlington on Sept. 20 sponsored by the Greater Burlington Partnership, the Hawk-Eye and KWQC-TV (>); and at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City on Oct. 14 hosted by the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, Sioux City Jo\ournal, KTIV-TV and KSCJ Radio.
