Leadership for Hawai'i DAVID'S STORY Growing up in Hawai'i, David learned firsthand the challenges our communities face. His father returned from serving in the 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team to become a steelworker, helping to build Hawai'i, and his mom was a dedicated nurse. Growing up with modest means in a family with six kids, David learned the value of hard work, dedication to family, and the importance of working together. David attended public school in Pearl City and went on to graduate from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa with a degree in electrical engineering. David later moved to 'Aiea with his wife Dawn to raise their three children, Lauren, Amy, and Matthew. David was first appointed to the State House of Representatives in 1985 by Governor George Ariyoshi, and served there until he was elected to the Senate in 1994. As Chair of the Ways and Means Committee, David oversees legislation related to Hawai'i's fiscal policies. This includes setting state revenue and spending priorities to balance the budget each year, controlling the amount of debt for capital projects, maintaining the State's excellent financial rating, and ensuring statewide implementation of planning, programming, budgeting and evaluation. During David's time in the legislature, he has fought to protect consumers, improve public education, and to increase the use of technology to reduce cost and to provide more access and transparency to government. As a father and a small business person, David's experience will bring a unique perspective to the Governor's Office.1his real-world experience is what we need in leadership. David's commitment to service, his passion for improving our communities, and his ability to build consensus and lead will help renew our promise and secure our future. David now lives in Aiea with his wife, Dawn, and their three children, Lauren, Amy and Matthew LEGISLATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS David has been a leader in the legislature for 28 years. During this time, David has held several leadership roles, including Chair of the powerful Ways and Means Committee. While serving in the legislature, David has worked to bridge gaps and build a consensus to move Hawai'i forward. Most recently, David built consensus among fellow legislators to draft and pass a bill fulfilling the Legislature's commitment to begin prefunding the State's liability for public employee benefits. This bill will moderate the unfunded liability burden to taxpayers for future generations and improve Hawai'i's fiscal standing and economy. Below is a brief snapshot of some of Senator lge's other major accomplishments while serving in the Hawai'i State Legislature • Created long-standing cost savings by mandating consumer-friendly reforms to the auto insurance industry • Drafted and obtained passage of the Hawai'i Telecommunications and Information Industries Act of 1988, which created better access to technology for residents • Obtained passage of the most comprehensive restructuring of the public education system, establishing accountability standards, capital improvements, and alternative educational options for parents • Spearheaded efforts to modernize state government and the legislative process by creating more transparency and cost-saving measures using technological and paperless initiatives WHAT AN IGE ADMINISTRATION MEANS FOR HAWAl'I An Ige administration will move Hawai'i forward. His leadership will bring people together, not divide them. As an engineer, business executive, and legislative leader, David has the real-world experience Hawai'i needs. • Inclusive and transparent style of governing • Focus on smart economic growth and development while protecting our environment • Embrace tourism and defense industries as economic drivers • Invest in innovation at the University of Hawai'i and commit to graduating students on-time • Refocus the State's commitment to education for our children and future generations With your support and commitment, we can move Hawai'i forward.
