Whether it was as Governor or Senator, Joe Manchin has always stood up for what's right for West Virginia and this country. Joe is a true West Virginia Democrat who is bringing our commonsense values to our nation's capital, where he's bringing people from all the political parties together to put our country first. Here's a closer look at what Joe is standing up for:

Standing up for Seniors
 
Senator Manchin is protecting the long-term solvency of Social Security from those who want to raid the program for short-term political gain – and he fought hard against reducing contributions to Social Security. Senator Manchin believes that we must keep our promises to seniors, and protecting Social Security and Medicare is one of his top priorities.

Standing up for Fairness
 
Senator Manchin is fighting to make sure that everyone in this country pays their fair share, and that no one gets unfair loopholes when it comes to paying their taxes. He supported the Buffett Rule, so that people who make $1 million or more a year pay at least the same rate as hardworking middle income Americans. Senator Manchin also supports bipartisan efforts to create meaningful tax reform that makes our entire system fairer.
 
Standing up for Coal
 
Senator Manchin is one of the leading voices for developing a comprehensive national energy plan – and that includes using coal, the most abundant, reliable and affordable source of energy we have. He believes this country needs to use all the sources we have without demonizing one resource, and he has introduced or sponsored dozens of bills to rein in the EPA and create a commonsense approach to energy.

Standing up for Jobs
 
Senator Manchin believes our top priority must be creating and protecting American jobs. That's why he's fighting hard for every job in West Virginia and this country. He voted against three trade deals that will send 250,000 jobs overseas. He is pushing to get Americans back to work rebuilding this country, especially critical infrastructure like roads, bridges and schools. He is supporting legislation that would force the government to be an ally, not an adversary.
 
Standing up for Women
 
Senator Manchin was a proud cosponsor of the Violence Against Women Act, which provides funding to help prevent domestic abuse. Senator Manchin believes that standing up for people when they are vulnerable is one of the core values of this country, and protecting women and children from abuse is one of his top priorities. Senator Manchin also supported the Paycheck Fairness Act, a commonsense measure which would have guaranteed equal pay for women.

Standing up for Veterans and Servicemembers
 
Senator Manchin is fighting far our servicemembers and veterans. He started the Senate Veterans Jobs Caucus, and its signature initiative – the "I Hire Veterans" project – has been called the new yellow ribbon to support our troops. Senator Manchin helped write the bill that gave the brave men and women who are serving this country a well-deserved pay raise. He believes we need to cut fat out of our defense budgets, not muscle, is working to reduce our reliance on expensive service contractors and invest those resources in our own military.

Standing up for the Next Generation
 
Senator Manchin is working hard to get this country's fiscal house in arder, just like he did when he was Governor. He believes we must protect programs like Social Security while making sure that we don't put the next generation into debt. He was the first Democrat to say he wouldn't raise our country's debt ceiling without a plan in place to fix our finances and he is bringing people together across party lines to get this country to live within its means.
