Notes: In her bid for a third term, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D) comfortably defeated state Sen. Michael Baumgartner (R). In the Aug. 7 top-two primary Cantwell finished first with 772,058 votes (55.66%) followed by Baumgartner at 417,141 (30.07%); six other candidates finished in single figures. Baumgartner was only elected to represent the 6th District (Spokane area) in 2010, and was not well known. Cantwell and Baumgartner met for one debate, hosted by the League of Women Voters of Washington before a live audience at public television KCTS 9 studios in Seattle (>). The race was not competive financially; according to Open Secrets (>), the Cantwell campaign spent $11.2 million compared to just less than $1 million for the Baumgartner campaign.
