MEET MAZIE

In Japan, my mother wanted the best for me.

So I spent my earliest years on my grandparents' rice farm.

For me, America was not the end of our journey. It was the beginning.

I went to public schools and, with help of federal work study, put myself through college at the University of Hawaii. After saving enough, I went on to law school at Georgetown University.

My mother taught me to never stop fighting for what's right.

I never thought I'd run for public office, but I believe one person can make a difference. I ran for the state house and earned recognition as a consumer crusader.

One of my proudest accomplishments was the reform of Hawai'i's workers' compensation law when I was Lieutenant Governor. We created the Hawaii Employers Mutual Insurance Company (HEMIC), saving businesses an estimated $85 million in its first year.

I believe public service means fighting side-by-side with families.

I'm running for the U.S. Senate to solve real problems for our families, our businesses and our communities. This will not be an easy journey, but with your kokua I know we will be successful.

Mahalo for your consideration.

WHY WE'RE IN THIS - The Challenges That Matter To Us All:

I'm running for the U.S. Senate to solve real problems for our families, our businesses and our communities. This will not be an easy journey, but with your kokua I know we will be successful.

A PLAN FOR OUR ECONOMY

Let's get our families and our local businesses back to work.

  • We need to get back to work fixing our aging roads, bridges and harbors to get our businesses and families moving again.
  • Our economic driver is tourism. We must cut through red tape that keeps visitors out of the U.S. That starts with my bipartisan VISIT USA bill - to grow our tourism economy.
Hawaii deserves a self-sufficient, built-to-last future.

  • We must grow our clean-energy industry and support home-grown resources like solar, wind, and geothermal.
  • Agriculture is part of our heritage. We need to help our farmers with access to water for irrigation, more farmers' markets, research to address pest and disease problems, crop insurance, and encouraging more families to buy local. We shouldn't be importing 85% of our food.

Strong schools mean a stronger economy for now and future generations.

  • The No Child Left Behind Law is broken. I've secured $115 million in funding for Hawaii's children, teachers, and schools and will continue that fight.
  • Focusing on subjects like math and science, we'll prepare our children for the careers of tomorrow, and provide Hawaii's businesses with the workforce they need to thrive and innovate.

  • Introduced the bipartisan VISIT USA Act to bring more visitors from China, Canada, and other important markets. If enacted, the VISIT USA Act would add an estimated 6,000 new jobs and $600 million each year in visitor spending to Hawaii's economy.
  • Co-sponsored legislation, signed into law by President Obama, that eased restrictions on citizens from South Korea hoping to travel to the United States. As a result, in 2010 alone Hawaii welcomed more than 81,000 Korean visitors, a 59% increase from previous years.
  • Authored an amendment that will bring $6 million in additional federal resources to improve Hawaii's airports.
  • Secured $2 million in funding to clean up a World War II-era dump site at Bellows Pier, Waimanalo.
  • Helped secure $4.2 million in funding for rural buses on Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Island.
  • Secured funding for Tutu and Me Traveling Pre-School Program, a free mobile preschool for Native Hawaiian and low-income keiki, reaching hundreds of children and their caregivers at over 20 sites across five islands – Oahu, Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, and Molokai.
  • Challenged the U.S. Postal Service after it announced plans to close the Kalaupapa Post Office on Molokai. Months later, officials announced the Kalaupapa location would be saved.
  • Secured $133,000 for improvement of the Lanai Women's Center and $25,000 in 2009 for the drug-prevention program on Lanai.
  • Secured funding to outfit a computer center at Kanuikapono Public Charter School in Anahola, Kauai – many of the children at this school do not have computers at home.
