About Rick Hill

A MONTANA STORY Like so many Montana success stories, Rick Hill started from humble beginnings. He was one of four children and grew up in a one-room apartment in the back of a tire repair shop. At age four Rick was paralyzed by polio–the same year he was discharged from treatment, he was chosen the captain of his wrestling team. He and his sister were the first in their family to attend college, and he was challenged early in his career by having to run a business and a household as a single parent.

PROVEN LEADERSHIP Rick ran successful businesses and built a reputation for strategic thinking and an exceptional understanding of what Montana's economy needs to grow and create jobs. He was tapped by Governor Racicot to tackle the crisis in the Montana State Fund. With a $550 million deficit and rates the 2nd highest in the nation, work comp was a major obstacle to growth. Rick worked as a volunteer as Chairman of the Board at the State Fund, and after only three years under his leadership the deficit was replaced with a $120 million surplus and rates were reduced by over 50%. The State Fund story is regarded as one of the most remarkable business turnarounds in Montana history.

CONSERVATIVE ROOTS Rick was elected to Congress in 1996, and quickly became a leader in the Republican Revolution. Reforming welfare, cutting taxes, balancing budgets, and fighting for Montana, Rick's work in Congress has had long-lasting effects. He is recognized for consistently standing against budget deficits, for his work in defense of free enterprise and personal liberty, and for standing against federal over-reach.

Rick was the driving force behind the Otter Creek coal tracts. He successfully stopped the federal government's attempt to lock up Otter Creek, and he set in motion the plan that will bring hundreds of new, high-paying jobs to Montana and billions in tax revenue.

Rick successfully prevented the Clinton Administration's plans to close Yellowstone Park to snowmobiling and to impose a "river czar" to regulate our waterways. He fought the reintroduction of wolves and grizzly bears in Montana, and supported a bill to repeal the Antiquities Act in order to prevent new monument designations. He helped defeat the Clinton proposal to nationalize education standards, and he supported school choice vouchers. Rick is pro-life, supports traditional marriage, and opposes radical sex education in our schools.

Rick Hill on the Issues
TAKE DOWN THE BARRIERS TO GOOD PAYING JOBS

Montana's adverse regulatory and legal environments are holding us back. I support reforms that will put Montanans to work. We can reverse the negative attitude about business by welcoming new investment and remaking our bureaucracy into facilitators instead of regulators.

MAKING SCHOOLS WORK
Montana's schools should be the best in the nation, but falling graduation rates and too little accountability are leaving our kids ill-served. I support merit pay, charter schools, and new accountability measures to ensure our schools are preparing our kids for a 21st Century economy.

MANAGING GOVERNMENT WE CAN AFFORD
Our state government has lately been spending more money than it brings in every month. That deficit spending is not sustainable. I support priority budgeting that judges programs based on effectiveness and gets rid of those that don't work. Lowering income and capital gains taxes, and eliminating the business equipment tax will make Montana's tax structure competitive with other states and spur growth.

PROTECT MONTANA FROM GOVERNMENT OVERREACH
Our state faces threats from an overreaching federal government, but our current leadership has been slow to protect Montana's rights. I oppose Obamacare, cap and trade, and new monument designations.
