BRINGING JOBS TO DELAWARE, HELPING BUSINESSES GROW

CREATING JOBS, ATTRACTING BUSINESS, GROWING THE ECONOMY

When Governor Markell took office in 2009, Delaware was enduring the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, rising unemployment and a
record budget shortfall. The Governor put his private sector business experience to work:

FOCUSING ON JOB CREATION by bringing in PBF Energy to reopen the Delaware City Refinery after it closed and encouraging employers like Amazon, Bloom Energy, and J P Morgan Chase to locate or expand their operations in Delaware.

MODERNIZING AND REFORMING GOVERNMENT by requiring lobbyists to disclose their efforts to influence legislation in Dover and putting the state checkbook on line, so voters can see how their tax dollars are being spent.

MANAGING TAXPAYER DOLLARS RESPONSIBLY by identifying savings, cutting waste, and successfully managing the state through some of the greatest fiscal challenges in its history, preserving Delaware's AAA bond rating.

STRENGTHENING DELAWARE'S FINANCES by working with Delaware's public employee unions to reform Delaware's health and pension systems, saving
taxpayers $480 million over fifteen years.

IMPROVING OUR SCHOOLS, OUR QUALITY OF LIFE AND OUR ENVIRONMENT.

Governor Markell has worked to ensure our state's quality of life remains attractive to entrepreneurs, executives, small businesses and families by focusing on our state's schools, environment, and energy costs:

MAKING DELAWARE AN EDUCATION LEADER
by bringing Delawareans together behind a school improvement plan that won national recognition and $100 million in new money for Delaware schools.

PREPARING CHILDREN FOR SUCCESS by making the largest financial commitment to early childhood education in state history and placing Delaware on
track to raise the percentage of low-income children in quality-rated preschool programs from 20 to 80 percent.

ENHANCING DELAWARE'S QUALITY OF LIFE by improving our coastline, preserving farmland and open space, and enhancing recreational trails and pathways statewide.

LOWERING ENERGY COSTS by partnering with the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation and local officials to reduce rates by at least 10 percent.

"Delawareans have a shared sense of priorities – a belief that we should put aside our political differences and embrace good ideas, no matter what party they come from. We know that what matters is getting results for our neighbors and our communities and doing what is best for Delaware."
