Plurality: 53,345 votes (10.07 percentage points). WV Secretary of State
Notes: Sen. Robert Byrd (D), the longest serving U.S. Senator—he was first elected to the Senate in 1958 and served more than 51 years—died at 92 on June 28, 2010. On July 16 Gov. Joe Manchin (D) appointed Carte Goodwin, his former chief counsel, to temporarily fill the seat. A special election was set, and on July 20 Manchin announced his candidacy. In the Aug. 28 Democratic special primary election, Manchin (73.06%) defeated Ken Hechler (17.27%) and Sheirl Lee Fletecher (9.67%) of 94,202 votes tallied. In the Republican special primary Raese (71.31%) defeated Andrew McCoy Warner (14.82%) and eight other candidates in single digits of 54,084 votes tallied. Raese, president and CEO of Greer Industries, was making his fourth statewide campaign in West Virginia; he was the Republican nominee for Senate in 1984, challenged Gov. Arch Moore (R) in 1988, and was again the Senate nominee in 2006. All four candidates participated in a debate co-sponsored by the Associated Press and WVU's P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia Public Broadcasting studios in Morgantown on Oct. 18 (>).
