The June 8 Democratic primary saw a big upset as unknown unemployed veteran Alvin Greene, without campaigning, defeated Vic Rawl, a member of the Charleston County Council, former circuit court judge and former state representative, by 100,362 votes (58.96%) to 69,853 (41.04%). In the Republican primary, DeMint defeated Susan McDonald Gaddy by 82.99% to 17.01%. According to Open Secrets, the DeMint campaign raised $7.2 million, spent $5.4 million and finished with cash on hand of $1.8 million while the Greene campaign did not file a report (>). As an improbable and enigmatic candidate, Greene received a lot of free media attention, albeit tinged with skepticism and ridicule. The outcome of the race was never in doubt, but Greene's story caught people's imagination to the point that it inspired a documentary and a graphic novel. See also: David Weigel.
