Notes: In the special election to fill out the remaining two years of Hillary Clinton's term, appointed U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) defeated former U.S. Rep. Joe DioGuardi (R). President-elect Obama announced his selection of Clinton as his Secretary of State on Dec. 1, 2008; the Senate confirmed Clinton on Jan. 21, 2009. On Jan. 23 Gov. David Paterson (D) announced his appointment of then-U.S. Rep. Gillibrand (D) to the fill the seat, and she was sworn in on Jan. 27. In the Sept. 14 Republican primary, DioGuardi defeated economic analyst David Malpass and former Port Authority Commissioner Bruce Blakeman by 41.8% to 37.7% and 20.5%. DioGuardi, a CPA, lost his 1988 re-election bid, and then lost congressional races in 1992, 1994 and 1996. In the Democratic primary, Gillibrand defeated attorney Gail Goode by 76.1% to 23.9%. Gillibrand and DioGuardi debated in New York City on Oct. 15, and at Russell Sage College in Troy, hosted by YNN and Time Warner Cable, on Oct. 21. The race was not competitive financially; according to Open Secrets, the Gillibrand campaign spent $13.2 million for the cycle, compared to $2.3 million for the DioGuardi campaign (>).
