Notes:
Sen. Richard Burr (R) won a second term, defeating Secretary of State Elaine Marshall (D) and Michael Beitler (L).

Burr easily won the May 4 Republican primary with 80.1% of the vote.
On the Democratic side, Marshall was a well-known figure, having first been elected Secretary of State in 1996.  She also sought the 2002 Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, finishing third.  However, state Sen. Cal Cunningham enjoyed support of national Democrats.  In the May 4, 2010 Democratic primary, of 425,343 votes tallied, Marshall finished first with 154,605 votes (36.4%) followed by Cunningham at 115,851 (27.3%), attorney Ken Lewis at  72,510 (17.1%), and the other three candidates in single digits.  In the June 22 Democratic runoff (>), Marshall defeated Cunningham by 95,390 (59.96%) to 63,691 (40.04%) of 159,081 votes tallied.

There were three general election debates: Burr and Marshall on Oct. 11; all three candidates hosted by WNCN-TV and the League of Women Voters of North Carolina on Oct. 13; and, hosted by the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters, on WRAL on Oct. 21.

According to Open Secrets, the Burr campaign spent $6.3 million and finished with cash on hand of $1.4 million compared to $2.8 million spent and less than $50,000 cash on hand for the Marshall campaign (>).
