We know Martha Coakley.
She is a leader who stands up for what's right.

Raised in a middle class family in western Massachusetts, Martha Coakley understands that families need real help in this economy.

As Middlesex District Attorney and now as Attorney General, she's gotten results for our families. She's put away child predators, prosecuted abusive nursing home operators, and cracked down on health insurers and pharmaceutical companies that commit fraud and drive up the cost of care.

Martha Coakley is a different kind of leader - one who stands up for our families and makes business and government play by the rules.

She took on the utilities for unfair rate increases, saving customers more than $100 million a year in lower energy costs. She defended our civil rights and challenged the Defense of Marriage Act.

And she is the first Attorney General in the nation to successfully take on Wall Street firms for their roles in the financial crisis, securing tens of millions of dollars in settlements for struggling homeowners and taxpayers.

We know Martha Coakley.
In the Senate, she will take on the issues that matter most to the people of Massachusetts and get results.

Why Martha Coakley Can and Should Be Our Next U.S. Senator

Martha is a different kind of leader who stands up for our families, gets results, and makes businesses and government play by the rules.

MARTHA'S BACKGROUND:

• Martha grew up in Western Massachusetts, in North Adams. Her dad owned a small insurance agency and her mom was a full time homemaker. Martha's parents instilled in their five children the importance of family and community, pitching in, and planning for the future.

• Martha's carried these values with her, from her first job scooping ice cream at Howard Johnson's, through Williams College and Boston University Law School, all the way to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office.

• Martha understands the opportunities she has had in her life, and in the Senate, she will continue to work to create those same opportunities for everyone in Massachusetts

MARTHA'S PRIORITIES:

Jumpstart the Economy:

• Martha believes the best way to get our economy back on track is to tackle the economic crisis head on and to take the necessary steps to get people back to work.

• Martha will promote the development of green jobs, which preserve the environment and create economic opportunity in Massachusetts.

• Martha will fight for stricter oversight of Wall Street and the financial industry to prevent another economic collapse.

• Martha supports stronger consumer protections, such as the creation of the new Federal Consumer Protection Agency.

• As Attorney General, Martha has recovered over $135 miIlion from Wall Street for taxpayers and consumers, has pushed Congress on consumer issues such as loan modifications for homeowners facing foreclosure, and brought suits against majar subprime lenders, restricting those lenders ability to foreclose on unfair loans.

•    On Friday, October 9, 2009, President Obama invited Martha to the White House for a meeting and press conference regarding the new Federal Consumer Protection Agency. President Obama welcomed Martha, and referred to her, AG Cuomo (NY), AG Madigan (IL), and AG Cooper (NC) as "... some of the finest Attorney Genera Is who are fighting against consumer fraud and have been dealing with some of the consequences of the issues that we're discussing here today."

Health Care Reform:

  • Martha understands comprehensive health care reform is necessary to control rising health care costs, guarantee access, and ensure high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans. In Washington, Martha will work to ensure health care reform is done effectively and responsibly -- and that reform addresses the spiral of rising costs.
  • Martha supports a strong public insurance option that will complement the existing employer sponsored insurance framework by providing coverage to those that lack it.
  • In Washington, Martha will fight to reduce health care costs by supporting a change in health care payment incentives and by reducing preventable hospitalizations and ER visits.

Create Educational Opportunity:

• Martha is committed to expanding educational opportunities for all and creating a system of education that will allow our children to compete in a global economy.

• Martha knows that the federal government is an important partner with states on education, and she will work to create access to higher education, close the achievement gap, and give Massachusetts the resources it needs for 21st century learning.

Support Seniors:

  • Martha is committed to fighting for the needs of senior citizens.
  • Martha knows that now is not the time to cut Social Security benefits. Martha supports emergency measures to ensure that Social Security beneficiaries receive a cost of living adjustment increase, and she is committed to ensuring that benefits are not reduced in the future.
  • As Attorney General, Martha brought enforcement actions against drug companies that artificially drive up health care costs, she targeted enforcement actions against long term care facilities for neglect and abuse and she protected seniors from predatory lending and telephone fraud scams.

Protect Children and Families:

• Martha has been an advocate for keeping children and families safe for over 25 years.

•    As Middlesex District Attorney and Attorney General, Martha reached a landmark settlement with manufacturers of toys with dangerous amounts of lead, securing funds that will be used in Massachusetts to prevent future cases of lead poisoning.

•    In Washington, Martha will work to ensure that all children have access to health care, which is why she supports S-CHIP, President Obama's extension of health care coverage for low-income; and she will continue to fight for the safety of all children and families by supporting policies that help law enforcement effectively protect children and by holding manufacturers of dangerous products accountable for the risks they pose.
