 Iowa Secretary of State

Notes:
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R) won a sixth term, defeating attorney Roxanne Conlin (D) and John Heiderscheidt (L).

In the June 8 Republican primary, Grassley was unopposed.
Three candidates vied for the Democratic nomination.  Conlin served United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa during the Carter administration and was the Democratic nominee for governor in 1982.  Bob Krause chaired the Iowa Democratic Veterans Caucus and was a former state representative.  Thomas L. Feigen, an attorney, served two years in  the State Senate.  Conlin (52,715 votes) handily defeated Krause (8,728 votes) and Fiegen (6,375 votes).

Grassley and Conlin engaged in just one debate, on Oct. 26, hosted by WHO Radio in Des Moines and broadcast on Iowa Public Television.

Grassley had a significant financial advantage over Conlin; his campaign reported spending $7.8 million for the cycle and finishing with cash on hand of $1.9 million compared to $3.1 million spent by the Conlin campaign and $28,815 in cash on hand.

Grassley carried 98 of 99 counties (all except Johnson Co.).
