REPUBLICAN PICK-UP
Notes:
U.S. Rep. John Boozman (R) soundly defeated incumbent U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D) and two third party candidates, Trevor Drown (I), a driver, and John Gray (G), mayor of Greenland.

Lincoln first faced a strong primary challenge from Lt. Gov. Bill Halter (1, 2).  In the May 18 primary, Lincoln finished first with 146,579 votes (44.51%) followed by Halter at 140,081 (42.53%) and businessman D.C. Morrison at 42,695 (12.96%).  As no candidate obtained 50-percent plus one of the vote, the contest went to a June 8 runoff.  There Lincoln defeated Halter by 134,756 votes (52.00%) to 124,405 (48.00%).

Eight candidates competed in the May 18 Republican primary.  Boozman won by a wide margin, tallying 75,010 votes (52.73%) to 24,826 votes (17.45%) for 2004 U.S. Sen. nominee Jim Holt and 16,540 votes (11.63%) for state Sen. Gilbert Baker; the other candidates finished in single digits.

In the general election, Lincoln and Boozman debated on Sept. 10 hosted by KLRT in Little Rock, and all four candidates debated on Oct. 13 at the University of Central Arkansas organized by the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) (>).

Open Secrets reports the Lincoln campaign spent $12.6 million compared to $3.7 million for the Boozman campaign (>).
