A Son Of Alabama

Born and raised in Birmingham, Richard Shelby is the son of a U.S. Steel draftsman and a fifth generation Alabamian. As a star defensive end on the Hueytown High School football team, he earned a scholarship to the University of Alabama, where he graduated from both the undergraduate and law schools.

Senator Shelby and his wife, Annette Nevin Shelby, now reside in Tuscaloosa, their home together for nearly fifty years. They have two sons: Richard Jr. and Claude Nevin. Claude and his wife Lisa have one daughter, Anna Elizabeth Shelby, and one son, William Nevin Shelby.

Staying In Touch Back Home

Since being elected to the United States Senate by the people of Alabama, Senator Shelby has held at least one open forum, public town hall meeting in each of Alabama's 67 counties annually. He does this because he believes that effective representation requires constant interaction and discussion with his constituents. Senator Shelby has held 1608 of these meetings thus far and continues to find them the best way to understand the impact of the decisions he makes in Washington on the people back home in Alabama.

Protecting The Taxpayer

Senator Shelby has been a tireless advocate on behalf of the American taxpayer and a vocal critic of wasteful government spending. He understands that hardworking taxpayers across America are disgusted with the federal government's burdensome tax and spend policies. Every Congress since his election to the Senate, Senator Shelby has proposed legislation to amend the United States Constitution to require a balanced annual budget. He is the leading Congressional proponent of a flat rate tax system to replace America's overly cumbersome existing tax structure. Senator Shelby was also a key advocate of Congress' decision to eliminate federal funding to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).

A Record Of Public Service

Before joining the Senate, Senator Shelby served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and two terms in the Alabama State Senate. He also served as a City Prosecutor in Tuscaloosa, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Alabama, and Special Assistant to the Attorney General in Alabama.

A Recognized Leader

Senator Shelby has received numerous awards for his outstanding policy record. Awards like the "Guardian of Small Business," from the National Federal of Independent Business; "Taxpayer's Friend," from the National Taxpayers Union; "Medaris Award," from the National Defense Industrial Association; "Spirit of Enterprise," from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; "Guardian of Seniors' Rights," from the 60 Plus Association; and "Friend of the Family," from the Christian Coalition are a testament to his support of these important issues.

Working For Alabama

Senator Shelby still understands that the best form of government is one that is smaller and less intrusive and that individuals can best manage their own lives while free from undue government influence and intrusion. He is running for re-election because he remains committed to freedom, family, and a strong economy for the benefit of the people of Alabama and the United States.
