Manifestos
Interest groups from across society, ranging from industry associations to non-profits and charities, are setting out their policy priorities for the 2026 general election in manifestos.  Typically an election manifesto provides an introduction to the sector or focus area, including some key statistics and context, before setting out priorities and recommendations.  Organisations may do member surveys, conduct workshops and hold regional meetings to help determine those priorities.  Oftentimes a group will hold a launch event to draw media attention to its manifesto.  Manifestos can be dismissed a "wish lists," but the National Road Carriers website clarifies, "Not a wish list.  A fix list." 

Most of the manifestos are well designed, featuring nice layouts and covers with attractive photos, while a few are more basic.  Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association of NZ put out a simple two-pager, while the New Zealand Initiative, "an independent public policy think tank supported by chief executives of New Zealand businesses," issued a kind of super-manifesto; its "Prescription for Prosperity 2026: Briefing to the Incoming Government," presents 235 recommendations across 26 chapters in 184 pages including 17 pages of notes. 

As the progressive communications firm For Purpose notes in its "Guide to Election Readiness," an election is a "strategic moment" in an organisation's long-term journey.  A manifesto can be an effective framing device for highlighting key priorities, but it may not fit with an organisation's strategy.  For example, in May, Tax Justice Aotearoa issued a manifesto-like Tax Policy Statement that it views as "more of an enduring set of policies that will have a life beyond the election." In July, Social Service Providers Aotearoa chose simply to publish an article on its website "What our sector wants this election year (>)."
