Nov. 6 update: AP called Wisconsin for Trump at 5:34 a.m. ET, bringing his total to 276 electoral votes and making him president-elect.

Election Night: How Many Days Will It Last?

For the big national news networks, Election Night is showtime.  They devote tremendous resources to providing coverage across multiple platforms, whether the viewer is watching the results on a big screen TV, their computer, an app on their cell phone or even listening to them on the radio.  Typically, coverage is centered on an elaborate set, sometimes with technological bells and whistles.  For example, NBC News is using "pioneering mixed reality technology and interactive graphical elements that extend into a working newsroom space."  CNN touts a "new Magic Wall experience via the CNN app."  FOX News has "augmented reality (AR) technology for anchor Bill Hemmer’s 'Bill'-board."  Ultimately, providing good coverage depends on having good, knowledgeable people, from the anchors at headquarters to the correspondents reporting from key states around the country as well as from the campaigns to the technicians who make it all possible.  In addition to reporting the results, coverage includes analysis; for example ABC News has contributors Donna Brazile, Chris Christie and Reince Priebus; at the other extreme C-SPAN promises "pundit-free coverage."  The expectation is that outcome of the presidential race will likely not be known for several days (+).  The outcome of the battle for control of the U.S. House may well take longer to determine.

NEWS ORGANIZATIONS ANNOUNCE THEIR PLANS FOR 2024 ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE

AP announces 2024 general election plans

The Associated Press, the most trusted source of accurate information on election night for nearly two centuries, will deliver that expertise to its member news organizations, customers and the public across all platforms when it counts the vote, declares the winners and covers the results on Nov. 5.

On election night, AP will count the vote and declare winners in nearly 7,000 races, delivering the results up and down the ballot from president, governor and Congress to local elections.

With a history of accuracy dating to 1848, AP’s vote count is used by thousands of major news organizations and customers and is considered the definitive source of race results. No other national news organization can match AP’s footprint, on-the-ground knowledge or the deep expertise of its elections team.

AP will declare the winner in the presidential race state by state, alongside 33 elections for U.S. Senate, 11 races for governor and elections for all 435 seats in the U.S. House, as well as some special elections in Congress.
AP will do so using its state-of-the-art analytical tools, premier vote count and AP VoteCast, its wide-ranging survey of the American electorate. Conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, AP VoteCast will be deployed in all 50 states.

In all, AP’s Decision Team will declare at least 6,823 winners in elections in federal, state and local office, including for all state legislatures holding elections in 2024, more than 150 statewide ballot measures, and dozens of local races.

“For more than 175 years, The Associated Press has been trusted to accurately deliver the results of the U.S. election without fear or favor,” said AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace. “AP stands ready once again to count the vote, declare the winners and cover the results. As an independent, nonpartisan news organization, AP is proud of the important role it plays in the American democratic process, and we look forward to informing the world of the outcome and explaining the results through our fact-based journalism.”
With AP political reporters located across the country, AP will continue to deliver fact-based, nonpartisan coverage of the candidates, the campaigns and the core issues affecting Americans as they cast their ballots. Coverage will also be available on APNews.com.

Additional highlights of AP’s coverage plans include:

  • 24 hours of continuous live coverage across the U.S. on Election Day, with more than 35 live video shots from every battleground state capturing voting, voter voices, vote counting, election night rallies, candidate speeches and evening watch parties. AP will also offer shots overlooking the White House, U.S. Capitol, Empire State Building and National Mall.

  • Timely updates on key races available to customers via AP’s Media API and AP Newsroom portal, as well as on APNews.com and the AP News app. Push alerts and breaking news banners will provide the latest news. Download the app for iPhone or Android

  • AP 360, the cooperative’s production services arm, will serve an array of national and global broadcasters by operating live stand-up positions in Washington, New York, Los Angeles and at the candidates’ election night headquarters, as well as custom live shots analyzing the outcome in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Luxembourgish, Greek and Arabic.
  • The election night map translated into 18 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French (two dialects) and Chinese (three dialects).

FOX NEWS CHANNEL TO DEBUT NEW IMMERSIVE GRAPHICS TECHNOLOGY IN ENHANCED STATE-OF-THE-ART STUDIO DURING 2024 ELECTION COVERAGE

NEW YORK — October 28, 2024 — FOX News Channel (FNC) will debut new immersive graphics technology during its FOX News: Democracy 2024 coverage on Tuesday, November 5th. As part of FNC’s renovation of its premiere Studio M earlier this year, the network’s engineers enhanced the viewer experience with several technology and design innovations, including augmented reality (AR) technology for anchor Bill Hemmer’s “Bill”-board, recently developed virtual set technology and new touchscreen applications for the FOX News Voter Analysis. The innovative tools will enable FNC’s reporting teams to seamlessly provide the audience with the most updated polling information and voter analysis throughout its marathon coverage.

Debuting on election night, the newly developed “Bill”-board technology was enhanced to include augmented reality attributes and 3D interaction, enabling Hemmer to further drill into election data in real time. Hemmer will now be able to interact and telestrate in 3D space as the infrared sensors can track anchors and objects. Additionally, the 3D space is equipped with voice to text where natural language will trigger augmented reality graphics. These new tools will be visible in population maps, outstanding vote maps and battleground state historical voting charts.

FNC also created several sophisticated multimedia presentation concepts to enhance the viewers election experience, including a ‘Path to 270’ map, showcasing the presidential nominees’ potential line to the critical electoral votes needed through dynamic 3D interaction. News anchors can present various scenarios by moving virtual objects representing the electoral votes in the path to win the presidency.. Additionally, the network developed a ‘Top 5 Closest Races’ tool which offers a snapshot of the races that are too close to call. This provides real-time updates on the candidates’ standings and the impact on the electoral landscape, allowing the audience to visualize the intensity and uncertainty of the closest battles for the presidency.

In addition to the technological enhancements, FNC also made several design improvements to its state-of-the-art Studio M which has served as America’s election headquarters over the last two presidential cycles. On election night, co-anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum as well as their panel will convene behind a bespoke “super desk,” designed for the anchors and their teams to use during special news coverage. Studio M also now features a two-story high accent feature wall and a 20 foot long ultra-high-definition media wall for showcasing video and photo elements during broadcast.  Additionally, dimensional accent walls and extensive lighting placements were developed to create multiple presentation areas in the studio.

FOX News Channel (FNC) is a 24-hour all-encompassing news service and has been the number one network in basic cable for the last eight years and the most-watched television news channel for more than 22 consecutive years, currently attracting nearly 50% of the cable news viewing audience according to Nielsen Media Research. Notably, Nielsen/MRI Fusion has consistently shown FNC to be the network of choice for more Democrat and Independent viewers, with the most politically diverse audience in cable news. Additionally, a 2023 New York Times/Siena College poll found FNC as the leading single source of news for voters across the country. Owned by Fox Corporation, FNC is available in nearly 70 million homes and dominates the cable news landscape, routinely notching the top 10 programs in the genre.
