Travels of Vice President Kamala Harris—October 2024

Former President Donald J. Trump  |  Sen. JD Vance  ||  Vice President Kamala HarrisGov. Tim Walz

Particularly noteworthy was Harris' closing argument speech on the evening of Oct. 29, which the campaign estimated drew more than 75,000 people to the Ellipse in Washington, DC—the same place where, on Jan. 6, 2021, then President Donald Trump spoke to his supporters before some of them invaded the U.S. Capitol.  The week of Oct. 7 was notable for a high-profile media tour.  Harris targeted several constituencies during the month including Black voters and Republicans.  Outreach to Black voters included visits to Black-owned small businesses, appearances in Black churches, and interviews with Black media.  One interesting example was her moderated conversation with young Black men and community leaders at Philly Cuts, a barber shop in West Philadelphia on Oct. 27.  Republican outreach ramped up on Oct. 3 when Harris rallied with former Rep. Liz Cheney at Ripon College, and continued with several events throughout the month.  In the latter part of October and into November Harris did big “When We Vote, We Win” rally-and-concerts featuring prominent supporters, including former President Obama (Oct. 24), former First Lady Michelle Obama (Oct. 26), Beyoncé (Oct. 25), and Jennifer Lopez (Oct. 31), and performances by musicians and musical groups including Bruce Springsteen (Oct. 24) and Jon Bon Jovi (Nov. 2).  In the first part of October Harris spent a fair bit of time on her day job as Vice President, working on the response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton.  Official trips to Augusta, GA (Oct. 3) and Charlotte, NC (Oct. 5) put Harris in a leadership role as she focused on Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.  On a lighter note, on Oct. 11 Harris stopped in at Latino-owned restaurant in Phoenix, AZ, and her discussion with the chef led to a short cooking video.   (see also: media  |  events  more activity)
