WisGOP Statement on Republican National Convention in Milwaukee

[Chicago, IL] – Today, the full body of the Republican National Committee officially selected Milwaukee as the host city for the 2024 Republican National Convention. After Joe Biden and Democrats abandoned the Badger State for Delaware in 2020, this announcement is a major victory for the city of Milwaukee and all of Wisconsin, and comes after months of hard work by the Milwaukee Host Committee and VISIT Milwaukee in partnership with local elected officials.

Statement from Milwaukee Host Committee chairman Reince Priebus, who oversaw two national conventions as Chairman of the Republican National Committee:

“I am ecstatic that the Republican National Convention will be held in Wisconsin – a state with both electoral importance and Midwestern hospitality that will make for a fantastic event. This convention will be great for the city of Milwaukee, and will allow Republicans to bring our message directly to the Badger State. The people of Wisconsin are the best in America, and I look forward to sharing all this great city and state has to offer with my fellow conservatives as we celebrate the nomination of the next President of the United States.”

Statement from Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Paul Farrow:

“The Republican Party was born in Ripon, Wisconsin, and we are thrilled to welcome the Grand Old Party home as we come together to select the next President of the United States. Rightfully deemed part of America’s Heartland, the hardworking farmers, manufacturers, and families of Wisconsin are the heart of what makes our nation special, and this convention will allow us to showcase all that the Badger State has to offer to the country and the world.

“The success of this bid wouldn’t have been possible without Reince Priebus and Gerard Randall, who brought together elected officials, business owners, and community leaders of all backgrounds. Mayor Cavalier Johnson and County Executive David Crowley advocated tirelessly for the investment that this event will bring to the Cream City, and VISIT Milwaukee spared no effort in ensuring that decision-makers knew that Milwaukee was ready to host a spectacular convention. We look forward to continuing our partnership to deliver a world-class event in 2024.”

The event will bring up to 50,000 visitors to the city and add $200 million to the local economy, and will be the first in-person national convention of either party in Milwaukee.

RNC FRAMEWORK CONTRACT IS A BETRAYAL TO THE PEOPLE OF MILWAUKEE

A response statement to Milwaukee Common Council Members from Voces de la Frontera Action, Never Again is Now, SEIU Wisconsin State Council, Freedom Action Now, and BLOC

(Milwaukee, WI) Wednesday, members of the Milwaukee Common Council voted 13-0 in approving a framework contract that moves the city closer to hosting the 2024 Republican National Convention. The agreement will go into effect if Milwaukee is selected as a host city by the Republican National Committee. In a joint statement released by seven council members, they claimed “pride” in “this important step”.

We are appalled that the 13 members of the Milwaukee Common Council and  Mayor Johnson are legitimizing and normalizing the contemporary Republican Party that has become a modern-day neo-fascist party inspired by Donald Trump’s unapologetic allegiance to white supremacist ideas. The Republican Party has declared war on our nation’s democracy. Republican Party leaders enabled and then excused a violent insurrection at our nation’s capital and are continuously working openly and aggressively to undermine our voting rights. Consider that a recent survey shows 66% of Republicans believe the “great replacement theory” that inspired the shooting in Buffalo, NY this May, as well as those in recent years in El Paso, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia. Given these facts, how can our city’s leaders assure our community will be safe with the RNC in our city?

The Republican Party is not welcome in a majority people of color city with the largest number of immigrants and refugees in the state of Wisconsin.  We do not want acts of racist violence against our community or our city turned into a militarized zone.

The Republican Convention will not have a positive impact on the vast majority of Milwaukee neighborhoods. The claims of a $200 million impact are little more than public relations talking points. They overestimate any real financial gain because Milwaukee’s hotels and restaurants are already filled during the summer. The RNC convention will simply replace those who normally visit our city. The most comprehensive study of the impact of national political conventions found they have no discernable impact on employment, personal income, or disposable personal income.

For at least two decades the Republican Party has been sticking it to Milwaukee. Republicans have blocked Milwaukee from passing a living wage through preemption, stopped paid sick days after a citywide Milwaukee referendum vote, slashed funds for public schools, blocked restoring driver’s licenses for immigrants, and they have refused to allow Milwaukee to generate its own revenue.

We are deeply disappointed that the voices and concerns of Milwaukee’s Black, Brown, and immigrant communities and the community members and organizations who publicly opposed the RNC being hosted in Milwaukee were ignored by this vote that normalizes an organization that has embraced white supremacy, authoritarianism, and acts of violence. Inviting the Republican Party to hold its convention in Milwaukee is like inviting the fox into the henhouse.

Voces de la Frontera Action, Never Again is Now, SEIU, FAN, BLOC: Milwaukee betrayed – decision to host the RNC undermines public safety and normalizes the far-right

(Milwaukee, WI) –On Friday, Milwaukee was approved to host the 2024 Republican National Convention, an alarming decision that normalizes an organization that has embraced white supremacy, authoritarianism, and acts of political violence. Hosting the RNC in Milwaukee rejects the voices and concerns of Milwaukee’s Black, Brown, and immigrant communities and the members of the LGBTQ+ community, people who value free and fair elections, and organizations who publicly opposed the RNC’s embrace of racist and xenophobic policies, anti-worker policies and attacks on women’s rights and LGBTQ rights.

In a press statement directed to the Milwaukee Common Council and Mayor Johnson on June 2nd, Voces de la Frontera Action, Never Again is Now, SEIU Wisconsin State Council, Freedom Action Now, and BLOC stated, “The Republican Party is not welcome in a majority people of color city with the largest number of immigrants and refugees in the state of Wisconsin.  We do not want acts of racist violence against our community and we do not want our city turned into a militarized zone.” The statement also refuted any claims RNC would positively impact the vast majority of Milwaukee neighborhoods explaining, “the claims of a $200 million impact are little more than public relations talking points. They overestimate any real financial gain.”

In fact, the city of Milwaukee will see little of the $200 million touted as coming into the area’s economy. As Marquette political scientist Philip Rocco pointed out last month, this number is wildly exaggerated. Much of the money that comes into the area will benefit private corporations; Milwaukee’s tax structure means that NONE of the revenues generated by hosting such an event will benefit the public.  A June bid by the Common Council to set aside a mere $6 million of the projected benefits failed. Hosting the RNC will be both dangerous and expensive, requiring extra policing for which the city will foot the bill.

Coalition to March on the RNC 2024

Coalition to March on the RNC 2024: New coalition announces intent to march on RNC in 2024 & protest Trump in Milwaukee

Milwaukee, WI – Organizers representing several different political, community, campus, and labor groups are joining together to form a new coalition whose purpose is to host a major demonstration during the week of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in 2024. There will be a press conference just outside City Hall two hours after the decision is made final on Friday, August 5.

“We welcome the opportunity to rally the masses of people across the country in opposition to the Republicans and their racist, sexist, bigoted, anti-worker agenda,” said Omar Flores, one of the spokespeople for the new coalition. “We’ll bring the fight right to their doorstep at their national convention in 2024.”

Before it was postponed, the various organizations comprising the coalition were set to host a rally and march on August 20 when Donald Trump and a coterie of other far-right ideologues were coming to Milwaukee as a part of the “American Freedom Tour”. The plan to demonstrate remains in place for whenever the tour eventually does come to the city.

“Donald Trump continues to represent the worst and most dangerous elements in this country, so even though he’s no longer in office it’s important that his presence be met with popular opposition,” said Aurelia Ceja, a member of the Milwaukee Alliance, one of the handful of organizations to have already joined the coalition. “We’ll be ready for him whenever he decides to come back to Milwaukee.”

Many of these organizations served as the core of the Coalition to March on the DNC back in 2019 and 2020 when the Democrats held their convention in Milwaukee. The coalition is seeking to unite as many different organizations under its banner as possible. Over the course of the next two years in the lead up to the RNC, representatives from the component organizations will discuss general and particular conditions and make plans for the demonstration.
